Not diggin' this.
Callahan isn't worth TODAY what he's been asking for...he won't be worth anywhere close to that amount 2, 4 and 6 years from now. As for St. Louis, this is the first I'm hearing about this. Isn't he signed through next season? If so, we can always move him for assets a year from now.

It's a very dangerous move to assume that a 39 year old player is going to remain healthy, no matter how healthy he has been previously.
Mhh, I don't know.

Rod Brind'Amour skated in mud for a real long time. Was he clutch when Carolina won? Of course, but he had way to much mucle on this body to move around well later in his career.

MSL skates really well. Of course he will keep going downhill a bit on a regular basis, I mean he is 38 y/o. I could definitely see him play decent hockey for the rest of this season and next. And then probably be able to contribute for a year or two after that.

He's a RW and plays the same spot on the PP that Nash and Zuccarello do. So we continue to have average center depth, below average LW depth, but 3 excellent NHL-level RW's with two solid prospects in the AHL. This smacks of the Gaborik situation last year where the coach is going to have to shuffle lines and play guys out of position just to get enough ice time for Nash and MSL.

Marty has been one of my favorite players for a long time, but I'm not as excited about this deal as I would have been even a couple years ago. Also, I know people love the idea of Marty teaching our own Hobbit how to be an all-star, but Zuccarello isn't built the same way and doesn't have the acceleration that Marty does. Hard to teach a player when he doesn't have the same gifts that you do.

Why do I suddenly get the feeling that if Girardi doesn't sign, that he goes to San Jose for Dan Boyle?
I agree. Its a real short term solution.

What we gear up for is the ability to open up a lot of cap space in 2-3 years. Some good UFAs could hit the market by then. OTOH, I am not so sure I like that strategy either.

That rolling three lines that can score will give two teams that are top-4 heavy on D problems?

I'd love to add MSL, no doubt about it. But it just doesn't make sense to me. AV has stated numerous times that he thinks this team needs to get bigger and stronger.

Always a great way to build a team...

I wish Sather and company would go after some young assets in return. But I guess thats too much work to target, develop, and cultivate a team. A 38 year old Martin St. Louis is apparently the answer. How is a team supposed to gel with such constant turnover?

The Penguins and the Bruins are on another level than this Rangers team. We aren't close. And if by some miracle we squeak by them, are we on the same planet as Anaheim, Chicago, San Jose or LA? Not even close. Anaheim would mop the ice with our midget wingers.

I've been saying it forever, this team should have been in on Filip Forsberg. We need young, long-term options with high upside, especially down the middle.

Wasn't a lot of that talk earlier on during the team's struggles? I'd have to think that rolling these lines...

Kreider - Richards - St. Louis
Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Pouliot - Brassard - Zuccarello

Would be scaring enough teams defensively to the point where being a bit undersized won't matter. The Blackhawks don't necessarily smash your face into the glass, bit they score a ton with their ridiculous depth.

I hate that he's being moved. I also hate that he's pricing himself out of this team and any good team. It's not like he wants something reasonable and Sather just doesn't want to give it to him. His demands are wacky and they're completely on him. He's going to Clarkson/Redden/Gomez himself by getting way more money than he deserves and eventually becoming an albatross for some team. You'd think there'd be some value in avoiding a sad end to a career like that, but I guess not.

Didn't you know, adding fellows who won Stanley Cups 10 years ago is the way to win in 2014?

It's possible that there aren't teams that are willing to trade good young assets for a few months of Callahan, who comes with completely ridiculous salary demands that no team who takes a rental at this point is likely to want to meet.

They finished last in the league in hits last year, if I remember correctly.

Clarkson and Clowe seem like viable targets.

It wasn't his skating that was the issue. It was his inability to recover from a knee injury that many young players would be able to come back from. A 26 year old player gets a major injury and he has time to recover. If a 40 year old suffers the same injury, it's much harder for him to recover and still be an effective NHL player.

I don't know anyone claiming that. However adding the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner for a 3rd line grinder? That's a way to win.

It sure is.

And if so, it is evidence that Sather has mishandled him as an asset.

THANK you. It's not like we know what's on the table for Callahan in terms of "younger assets". We're all assuming that it's something like Stewart + Prospect + Pick. But in actuality if it's JUST Stewart, or Stewart and a pick - MSL is the MUCH better return, in my opinion.

People seem to be forgetting that teams know Callahan has essentially priced himself off of the Rangers.

Downplaying Callahan's accomplishments with this description is pretty sad if you ask me.

And I agree that he should be traded.

He's a grinder and he's on the 3rd line. I don't see what is so farfetched about it.

So get bigger and stronger in the bottom six.

Stamkos will be a FA in '15-'16 unless he resigns, which of course is a big possibility, but just imagine getting him at 27 with the cap space we save by letting certain people walk and not taking on any long term contracts.

On top of that 80% of our own fans know Callahan isn't going to get some mega package in return, you guys would really rather have Stewart and a late 1st? That's the exact kind of reclamation move we've made for years and they don't pan out very often.

No its not weird.

If MSL is getting traded from a red-hot Tampa its because things has gone real sour there. No other reason. Tampa takes a decision to move him first, then they look at what the return might be.

And on to that topic, who is interested in MSL and what can they offer? Yes there is a bunch of contenders who would love to get him, and who would offer a 1st and a prospect that isn't that sexy. Look at where Tampa is at, its not time for them to flush this season. They have built long and hard to get to where they are right now. There just ain't many alternatives out there, ie teams that will trade a player for MSL that will take MSL's position in the line-up. I have a hard time seing anyone topping an offer for Cally for sure.

I don't buy that we will have to add picks and prospects. I am not saying that we will get MSL, what do I know, but Tampa is not moving him because of what the return will be, they are moving him because things have gone south. Otherwise they would "never" do it. If they have decided to move him, looking at what position they are in right now, who could make a better offer for them than we if we are moving Cally? He seems to be a real good fit for them.

Size and toughness is very overrated anyways.

Unless you're one of the ones who believe Dan Carcillo is the reason for the Rangers turnaround.
