Doan signs 5 year contract with the Yotes...

for a cool number of just under 23 million dollars ... just under 4.6 per year

Hartnell now has his benchmark

Doan agrees to five-year deal with Coyotes

Don't worry, Hartnell should not be considered a straight up comparable. After all Doan has had what 6 or 7 straight 20+ goal 50+ point seasons? Hartnell will have only scored more than 20 twice (banking on him scoring 1 more goal), and he has never scored more than 48 points...I still think he will get close to what Handtrick mentioned he would sign for....4-6 years at 2.5-3.5 a year.

Doing that all on which line again? ... yeah that's right the third line with a rookie ... and some schlub named Vasisuck, Nichol & Fiddler ... he'll get somewhere around 3.5-4 mil x 4-5 years (hopefully)

I wouldn't count on it....I think it will be a lot less than what most must be thinking.

Consider:

We signed Jason Arnott for 4.5 million a year as an UFA.
We signed Paul Kariya for 4.5 million a year as an UFA.
We signed Jason Dumont for an average of 2.25 million a year as an UFA.

There is no way we are going to give Harts 4.5 million because frankly we could get a better player than him on the market at that cost. Scott is going through probably one of his most inconsistent years as a player. The hitting is down, and the inclusion of Vern Fiddler on the third line is killing him at even strength. He is not worth 3 million right now as a player, but I would not be upset to offer him something along the lines of 4 years 10 million, etc (potentially higher depending on how he finishes the season/playoffs).

I don't think Hartnell's struggles as a result of his linemates should detract from his value. Keith Tkachuk was making some hefty coin at one point doing arguably the same thing Hartnell was doing when he was red-hot...parking in front of the net and tipping pucks in. To flinch at paying a guy(understand I'm not advocating 4.5 or even 4 million for Harts) because he doesn't create his own offense is a little silly, though.

As a Bruins fan I hope Boston offers a 5 year $20 million contract.

I'm curious as to what makes Hartnell so valuable? His two-way play? His size? His physical play?

Well, just what I mentioned. When you have a team that's mostly loaded with smallish forwards, and the only other "big" forward you have is used primariliy as a point man, you have to have someone with decent size and and good hands to do the dirty work in front of the net. He has 19 goals this year doing just that...and honestly, there's not really anyone else on the team or even system who is capable of that job.

True, but that would make him more valuable to us than some teams on the open market, not necessarily changing his dollar value. We need a big body that can bang, and work the front of the net. Lots of teams already have that.

I see a number between 3-4. I dont think he'd be worth much higher than that to us. I just see someone like Minnesota or Boston or Toronto throwing a decent size wad of cash at him.
