if mike could score on a breakaway he might have twenty goals already. alas, he has had a lot of trouble and has been very frustrated this year.

That's pretty amazing you say that TXPD when I have heard nothing but good things about Mike Grier and how he plays with his heart and I've even heard players on the team say that he hussles every night and really plays the game of hockey with his heart. I think he's a great player.

Not sure what you've heard, but from what I've seen, he plays decently defensively. However, TXD is completely right: if Grier could finish half of his breakaways, he'd have 15 - 20 goals right now, and lead the league in shorties.

Indications are that he has leadership qualities, and has worn an 'A' on several occasions this year.

Grier has had by far the most clean breakaways of any player on the Caps this season. almost all of them were created completely on his own. he could have 6 or 8 short handed goals alone on those breakaways. had bondra been getting those breakaways instead of grier peter might be headed for 50 goals this year.

but the breakaways didnt come from passes....the caps have one defenseman and about 3 forwards that are consistantly capable of making a tape to tape breakaway pass and grier doesnt skate with any of them and neither does Bondra as a rule.

I am still waiting for Trent Whitfield to set up Bondra for just one scoring chance.

I think we should give credit to grier on those breakaways. his ability consistantly create those breakaways on his own is nothing short of amazing. his capability in that area is scouted and coached prior to any team playing the Caps, yet he continues to make them happen and against good teams, too. The only thing more amazing his how snake bit he is on all those breakaways.

what we should remember is that those breakaways will continue to come and maybe next year they go in for him as often as they have not this year.

I got to see almost all the games he played at Boston University. He was wildly popular(we often chanted "Rosey!"). He was an absolute tank, and the open-ice hit he put on a B.C Eagle in the Beanpot a few years ago is legendary.

Excerpted from last year's Beanpot wrap-up story:

"With approximately four minutes to go in the second period, BC's Chris Collins was skating with the puck at center ice. He never saw McConnell coming at him. Faster than you can ask, "Where did that freight train come from?" McConnell hit Collins with such force that it reminded fans of the hit that former Terrier Mike Grier put on the Eagles' Greg Callahan in the Beanpot about a decade ago."
