Poor Souray...
hmmmm....Chara...pronger....markov....blake...all have been called for the same penalty....they should be put on waivers!

He should be the new captain. And sign him to a 3 years 14.5M deal.

$18M/3yrs, NTC... I don't see what's really so difficult about it either... it's not like Souray is going to get *dramatically* more than that on the open market. And as much as I'm a Gainey disciple, I have to say any policy of no-nonKoivu-negotiations in mid-season is a really dumb one in the modern NHL. That's one stone age management approach that we had better drop ASAP, if in fact it exists.

Hahahahaha

If you think Souray's going to sign ANYWHERE next year for $2.5m, you're out of your mind.

I'd consider it a steal if Bob can get him for $5.5m.

Go here:
http://www.nhl.com/nhlstats/app?fetc...ewName=summary

You can clearly see that Souray is in the same league (in terms of points) as:
- Lidstrom
- Niedermeyer
- Gonchar
- Boyle
- Pronger
- Visnovsky
- etc

He's waaayyyy ahead of the pack in terms of goals. 9 more goals than Lidstrom and Niedermeyer. 10 more than Pronger.

IMO to dertermine an estimate of Souray's price tag, you take a salary comparable to Niedermeyer/Lidstrom/Pronger and take off max around $2M because of reasons we're all familiar with (avg defense). You have to compare to Pronger/Lidstom etc because of the intangibles such as leadership, fan popularity, etc.

Souray derserves between 5 and 6 million... no doubt

No... too poor in his own zone... Niedermeyer/Lidstrom/Pronger are true demon in their defensive zone, Souray isn't ...

Um, yeah? At least I'd say we have a better chance. If we call up Souray and offer him $2m, he laughs, hangs up the phone and signs elsewhere, guaranteed. We can at least try and COMPETE by offering him 5.5

What stops us from dealing Souray for prospects and resigning him in the off-season? If it helps the team, I'm sure he'd do it, provided he wants to stay here.

I wouldn't do it with Markov, however. I just think he might take it the wrong way if we traded him and I don't want to give another team a chance to sign him, we should get him signed quickly.

I know he deserves $4m ... I said that in post #9.

But you have to factor in UFA price inflation.

Personally, I'd give Souray a $5M, 3 or 4 year contract (hopefully 3).

He'll probably get $5.5-$6M though

I agree that I'd offer him a 3-year, 15-16 million dollar contract, but a team will hand him $6 million per season, and I hope it's not us. Then again, realistically the difference between $5 million and $6 million per season is negligible.

I'm the only one thinking that Souray won't stay here if we trade his buddy Koivu, I mean he has enough reason to just go west ( aka his daughter ) so if you trade Koivu, Rivet will probably go and Souray won't stay without his two friends.

I'm trying to point out why it's absurd to offer him $2.2. There isn't even a chance of him signing anywhere for that price, so why offer it? At least if we offer him a contract around what he's expected to fetch on the open market (if not a little lower) than we can try to keep him...which I think we need to do under any possible circumstances.

Why should you anyway? You clearly make no sense with gems such as:

The fact is: Souray has been one of the few positives this year...making him responsible for the woes of this team is incredibly ignorant/stupid...but I bet the 15+ other ****** players on our team would be relieved to see your post. We have better chance to win with Souray on our team, than without.

Hopefully Bob signs him fast, else trade him for some very good assets. Just don't stay aside and watch the boat pass by(?). If he is gone, I will miss him beating the crap outta people. That and that awsome accurate and deadly shot.

...just...go home man, think about where this team would be without Souray!?...Who motivates the young kids and praises them on the ice? Souray...who goes out around the community to hang out with fans..Souray...who stepped up in the players only meeting? You guessed it...Souray! we need to sign this guy and for a long period of time!

At the deadline and we are on the outside looking in, deal him off.

Do what the Flyers are doing with Forsberg. Get an overpayment for a UFA, and sign him back in the summer.
