Coburn is too important to the team.

Is Franson an RFA or UFA? If RFA I'd actually do that deal as a Flyers fan.

Seems like it would be another in a long line of Leafs experiments on the blueline. Not a good fix.

I would do this deal. Not bad at all. leafs may have to add a 3rd or 4th round pick regardless tho.

Basically, it would be like adding a better Tim Gleason type Dman and another dman like Tim Gleason with maybe a bit more foot speed. Both block shots and can log important minutes. Definitely an upgrade on OUR porous defense. Gotta cost something to pick up those two. Plus we are not giving up any young forwards.

Leafs might have to add a prospect: MacWilliam might be of interest?

so:

Jake Gardiner (RFA)
Cody Franson (RFA)
A. MacWilliam - (23 yr - LD - Height 6.02 -Weight 230) http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=112349

for

Nicklas Grossman
Braydon Coburn

I don't think Coburn or Grossman can play the right side which is an issue...leaves us with really only Phaneuf who plays the right side, but he's a left shot.

Phaneuf & Rielly are the long term solutions for backend offence.

Flyers POV: Once Timonen retires only Streit is capable of putting up points.

so you would trade 2 young O Dmen for 2 30 year old D dens?

thank god your not our GM... if your going to do that please make the Ddmen better than grossman.. Although BC is good not worth Jake and Cody

grossman is not the answer.

i would be interested in coburn but why would philly want to move him? is he not their best defenseman who isnt pushing 40. i thought he was a gunnarson type?

The two D Dmen are a considerable upgrade on what we have. Its gonna cost something dude. Not what you want to get rid of, but players the Flyers actually need. That is why you are not a GM. This is a solid proposal that helps both teams. Granberg can move the puck, Percy and Finn as well. Reilly can move the puck a little from what I hear.

Take out Grossman and Franson... Leafs don't need to make such a monumental change.

Coburn has played on the right side most of his time in Philly but he's also a left shot like Phaneuf. The Flyers probably wouldn't do this cause it's a downgrading from Coburn for potential and they're fighting for a playoff spot.

Grossmann for Franson?

Grossman is a solid bottom pairing D.

Phaneuf Gunnarsson
Coburn Rielly
Grossman Gleason

Perfect D core for Carlyle to work with. As a pair Grossman/Gleason can help us in the playoffs.

Kessel+ to entice Philly into trading a #1 center they have no replacement for.

Absolutely. You'll be wishing later you didn't. Franson puts the "sucks" in "pylon".

I don't think its a monumental change. Its adding two shot blockers (which can translate to an offensive breakout), two with significant dmen with playoff experience.

Our defensive unit is bottom 6 in the league. Gotta add when we can until our Marlies/Junior players are ready, Tom Nilsson from the SEL as well.

Tho I will say that a lot of the issues are related to our wingers not getting back deep in our own zone gettingpuck pressure and players like Kadri trying to cheat up in our own zone. Might be that two veteran dmen might convey that message more than the current dmen (Gardiner & Franson).

Nah.

Coburn is great but not for those two. Franson plays a very important role with the Leafs. Only RHD, plays 1st unit PP, leads defense in scoring, etc. And I'm not ready to give up on Gardiner yet. He has too much skill to just let go. He's having a down season unfortunately.

Only way I'd trade Gardiner right now is if Couturier or Schenn are coming the other way.
