Tho I will say that a lot of the issues are related to our wingers not getting back deep in our own zone gettingpuck pressure and players like Kadri trying to cheat up in our own zone. Might be that two veteran dmen might convey that message more than the current dmen (Gardiner & Franson).
It is a pretty monumental change... you're talking about trading 2 offensive minded-guys / strong puckmovers for two defensive minded guys, when really, all we want to do is make that swap once.

Like you said, one of Toronto's biggest problems is the lack of breakout support. A guy like Grossman can't / won't succeed here in a top 4 role... especially if he's not playing alongside a guy like Rielly. If we were to make this 2-for-2 swap, we don't have enough puckmovers to go around.

Coburn is the guy we want / need. He'd be a solid #3 defenceman that we could quite easily line up alongside Franson on our 2nd pair, and at $4.5m, a good fit for us cap-wise.

Perfect D core for Carlyle to work with. As a pair Grossman/Gleason can help us in the playoffs.
The Leafs don't need another bottom pairing defenceman, especially at the cost of a top 4 guy. We already have 2 bottom pairing defencemen in Rielly & Gleason.

Probably because there's no earthly reason why the Flyers would move Coburn for Jake Gardiner straight-up.

Grossmann for Franson?
If I did it at all, it would be to get Coburn, that being said if he can play right side that's good might let us go with

Gunnar-Phaneuf
Gleason-Coburn
Grossman-Reilly

although I can see why you might not want to do it either given like you said, you are competing for a play off spot.

So add pieces to make a deal work.

Toronto's interest in Grossmann is zero. He's just another Tim Gleason when the Leafs need a guy who can anchor a #2 pair.

There is no pieces to add to make it work.

Philly NEEDS a d-man better than Coburn. You have 1....Dion.

Philly CANNOT trade Coburn without a BETTER THAN HIM TODAY d-man coming back.

Both teams need defense...we are not good trade partners.

No, were losing our best d-man (who's still signed) and not getting someone to replace that...

Moving Coburn won't fix our defense at all. I'm fine with moving Grossmann, but not Coburn.

Now that the Flyers picked up a D, who knows. I'll take Grossman for Franson.

You want gardiner. You have to give a similar age and upside player. So either him or schenn. Nonnis has stated he doesn't want to trade him and only will to strengthen a position of weakness with a player of similar age

Oh man, I thought you were kidding.

Here is the mandatory: He doesn't represent other Leafs fans.

Now I'm going to leave this thread and never look back.

Except both of the Flyers players are better. And no...we don't want Gardiner. We want a top pairing Dman that knows how to play defense...something Gardiner is still learning.

I'm just stating what it would cost to get gardiner. Not my opinion it's what nonnis pretty much said.

How good is Coburn's skating? Does he skate well (at least for his size)?

The Leafs have Bozak, Kadri and Bolland down the middle, with Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Raymond and Clarkson on the wings. Where would you slot Couturier or Schenn in our line up exactly?

The Leafs have no problem scoring goals - our problem is keeping the puck out of our own net, so ignoring value (back to that in a minute...) this makes zero sense.

Value wise, Gardiner is not the player Leafs fans (me included) projected him to be 2 years ago. Nonis is not looking to move Gardiner because I'm sure he's aware the return would be underwhelming. Let's keep in mind that David Rundblad only fetched
a late 2nd.
