Who could ever forget that scream when he took Grabovski's stick to the face? I am certain that was what truly did him in.

Sucks for him, the league, and especially for the Flyers that he is nigh done.

I wonder if Pronger will stick around the club once he officially retires. It would be cool to have an imposing figure like Pronger behind the bench to mentor our young defenseman in a couple years.

Here's an interesting question: Could Chris Pronger remain on PHI's LTIR and at same time work for @NHLPlayerSafety? Perhaps we'll find out.
Quote:
It's believed @NHLPlayerSafety has interest in Pronger, and vice versa, but his status on LTIR requires attention. NHLPA is involved.

So in other words, he'd have to retire to take the job, leaving us with his cap hit. Ugh, that would suck. Can't really be mad at him if that is the case, but it would still suck. At least the last two years of his contract are only $575,000.

Now if he retires, is the cap hit the same as what it has been or what he is actually making?

Pronger's just going to have to wait a few years, or find a job that doesn't involve any kind of decision making that can affect NHL teams while he's still being paid by the Flyers

We would be docked with a $4,921,429 caphit in dead space if he retires within the next three years.

Salary wise he's making $4M this year & then $575K the remaining two years.

... or retire.

He's not obligated to ride out his contract. I'd be surprised if he did retire, given that the NHL won't be able to compensate him at the level he'll get for remaining a Flyer.

Can't Pronger just enjoy his time off and free pay for 3 more years? Do it for Homer, man.

It would seriously handcuff us if he were to retire before his contract is up.

If he wants to forfeit $1,150,000 and screw over the team who has paid him a fortune then he can retire next year, sure. I'm pretty sure an NHL desk job won't be paying him half a million a year, though.

I wonder if a deal can be made for the NHL to get Pronger on their team while waiving the remaining couple of years of his contract. It wouldn't make sense for him to be representing the NHL in any official capacity while still being paid by a team. Everybody knows his career is done and it was a freak accident that finished it. Common sense points to a win-win.

Of course, there will be other teams who will complain (and not without justification) that the Flyers should not get a mulligan on Pronger's 35+ contract. The only way to reasonably deal with it would be an amendment to the CBA about career-ending injuries of a nature that are not aggravations of an existing condition in which the contract is dissolved or significantly reduced.

I'll riot and burn down the league office if Pronger retires and the Flyers are stuck with his cap hit after the way they let the Devils weasel their way out of the Kovalchuk situation.

Pretty much what I said.

Just depends on whether or not he cares more about money at this point, or if he really wants work for the NHL now (instead of waiting for three years).

I think it's a little wrong that the NHL would try and hire Pronger while he's still on the LTIR then make the Flyers suffer the caphit. That would seem like they are trying to intentionally screw over the Flyers there. No conspiracy theory here but it just seems a little messed up.

I'd be pretty upset if he retired and left the flyers in a bad position like that. I hope he just sits at home comfortably and keeps cashing in his paychecks.

I am sure that some kind of deal would be worked out between NHL and Flyers should the plan to hire Pronger come to fruition.

Ugh, I'd be more annoyed at the fans screaming, "How could he do this to us?!" than the actual situation if Pronger were to retire.

The man can do whatever he likes. If he'd feel more fulfillment by working for the league, then more power to him even if it means he must retire.

It would not surprise me, though, to see the NHL waive the 35+ rule in career-ending instances. It should have been done with the new CBA. Everyone (should) know that the rule was not designed for cases like Pronger's...

Interesting situation, I mean the NHL went back and gave the Devils their pick when Kovalchuk bounced, so they will change things. I mean, its such a weird thing, because if the league takes Pronger and we get hit for a massive dead cap hit, we'll all cry they are out to get us. If the league waives it, then you'll have potentially 29 other teams crying that we are favored.

If they waive Pronger's cap hit, I think they'd pretty much have to do the same for Savard.

Pronger retires, the Flyers are stuck with his cap hit but they win the lottery this year when they miss the playoffs. Done deal

Bettman was asked about this a couple days ago on Hockey Central and he stated that he has no issues with Pronger working for the Player Safety committee while still being a member of the Flyers.

and if it did come down to Pronger having to retire to take the position, you'd think the NHL would simply void his cap hit then.
