Holmstrom Re-Signs: 3 Years $2.25M per

I know he doesn't have the points Smyth does, but a guy that plays Smyth's game. Is Smyth's 9 more goals worth $3M?

Thats crazy good amount to sign someone at for 3 years, someone who plays that game. Its getting mighty hard to give Smyth $5 mil-ish when guys like these sign at these rates. Now don't get me wrong Smyth is hands-down better than Holmstrom, but $3 mil better?? I am really looking at $4.5-ish now with all these signings...Can we give him a NTC aswell....

Ya that contract could be a bit low for holmstrom, but get ready to be hit by the "Intangibles" train of replies.

Well since no one else has taken a shot at this one, I guess I can make an attempt:

Ryan Smyth:
655:02 ES
33 pts
3.02 ESP/hr

99:07
1 pt
6.58 PKP/hr

232:08
15 pts
3.88 PPP/hr

on pace for 82 pts

Tomas Holmstrom
621:50
27 pts
2.61 ESP/hr

0:29
0 pts

238:21
13 pts
3.27 PPP/hr

on pace for 58 pts

Players aged similarly to Smyth averaging around a ppg this season:
Martin Straka - 3.1M

Mats Sundin - 7.6M

Daniel Alfredsson - 4.68M

Steve Sullivan - 3.2M

Daymond Langkow - 2.44M

Slava Kozlov - 2.014M

Paul Kariya - 4.5M

Patrick Elias - 7.5M

Peter Forsberg - 5.75M

Average - 4.53M

It's pretty clear to me that Smyth's point totals sit him pretty close to 4.5-5 million per annum. I'd wager Holmstrom's might be a little low for a 60 pt player this season (I honestly don't know) but Smyth's expected salary doesn't look that out of place.

Combine the fact that Smyth is always out against the opposition's top line and he's a "name" player compared to a guy like Holmstrom and I can definitely make a case for Smyth being at least worth 4.5M. Anybody want to figure out who Holmstrom is usually out against in Detroit?

Yeah, I guess I long for the days when we got a discounted contract. It's hard to spot a guy value full over the long term. Thanks for running the numbers.

Value Full Contracts + Budget = Holes

Smyth deserves the money, but I do wonder about some other contracts.

How much should a No Trade Clause drive down a contract? Quarter or half million per year?

Depends on the player. Chara's value was in no way affected by the NTC
