You don't trade the face of the franchise, and one of the most popular players on the team the past 20 years, who for the most part has played well up until recently, just because the team hits a bit of a slide.
If ya did, Koivu would of been traded away by Montreal, 5-10 years ago.
Amazing how so many of you where all behind him when he was doing well and the team was doing well only a month or so ago and now all of a sudden you are like rats jumping from a sicking ship!!!
He's the captain and the team's highest-paid player. It's his job to do it over 82 games, not 40. Name one other captain being paid that much who's been as inconsistent and ineffective as Koivu has. I think you'd be hard pressed.
As a Hab fan over 30, the Koivu era has been pretty lousy and forgettable for me anyway. I won't be too upset to put it behind us and move on to the next era, with a new on-ice leader. I'm not calling for his immediate trade, but if that $5 mil could be put to better use, I wouldn't get weepy over his departure. He'll never be a PPG player again, and his intangibles are negligible at this point.
I pretty much agree, and I resent the smugness of Koivu loyalists who imply that you can't be a real fan if you'd consider trading him.
Wanting the team to move in another direction doesn't mean that you hate the player or the man. It doesn't mean that "he sux0rz!" It just might be time to change the team's personality and make-up when (or if) the opportunity arises.
