Going for goaltending?

With Huet likely gone for the year, do we go for stopgap goaltending?

Some (ie. our friend EK) think so, here's his latest:

I, for one, totally disagree, regardless of how Halak does in the short term.We are NOT legitimate contenders this year, we went after supposedly a franchise goalie with Pick #5 in the draft,we have a former #1 goalie in Aebisher, Halak has shown great promise, let's just play it out and not waiste assets and $$$ over yet another goalie, PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAASE!!!

We'll see how Halak plays tonight...if he's not ready, we might look for a veterant back-up, even if we are not a cup contender...

Well if we're not contenders what good does acquiring a veteran back-up does to us? It would depend on what we would have to give, but I wouldn't even dare giving up draft picks...because a veteran back-up would change nothing to the situation, so he'd be kind of useless

Making the playoffs is a good reason. We're still very much in it and there's NO WAY Bob Gainey is giving up that easily on them.

I say if Halak is not ready and Eddy can come cheap. Why not..

This team shouldnt miss the playoffs and they wont.

What I meant is: if we're still losing and we're almost sure that we are out of a playoffs spot at the trade deadline, trading for a back-up would be useless

Why would we trade for a goalie it's just dumb its the one area we are strong in now and down the road. to me its just plain dumb.
Esche or any of the other available goalies are no better than Abby.

Goaltending is the least of our problems, the goalies this year have done there job on most nights.

I personally think that our goaltender did a lot of sucking since december 23th.

Yes it would still be a problem...If you want to win with Abby you have to score at least 4 goals not sure if this helps us a lot

Virtually the whole team has stunk since then, I don't think belfour, esche or any of these type of guys are an improvement at all.
just cause Belfour plays good against us everytime we play him doesn't mean anything. I've seen him let many soft goals in against other teams. The whole notion of getting guys like that is just silly

That's part of the reason why philly and Fla are 15th and 14th in the east ...our goalies are part of the reason of our downfall here, and going after a goalie doesn't mean getting belfour or esche.

You're probably right about Belfour, I don't particularly like that notion but at the same time if there's anything I've learned since I'm a Habs fans it's :

1) When our goaltender isn't our best player, we suck.

2) Good old Eddy is never dead.

well that's what people are suggesting we do(get Belfour/Esche types), as well as some of the trade rumours. This is what im responding too.

I still think we should look at addressing our needs and i don't see goaltending as one of them now or in the future.

No need for that. Even if the Habs make the palyoffs, they won't go far anyway. The club is deep at that position anyway.

The very last position where we need to put our energy on a trade is BY FAR goaltending. The Defensive and Offensive aspect of the team affraids me way more than having to search for a goaltender.
