This Day In Flyers History: Broad Street Brawl

Where were you 10 years ago today when the Flyers and Senators had the biggest brawl in NHL history? Let's take a trip down memory lane.

It was mentioned during the broadcast tonight.

What separated it from brawls of the past was the immediacy surrounding faceoffs.

Watching on TV. HATED this brawl, still do. Flyers were without Roenick, Primeau, Fedoruk, and McAllister...Brashear was the 1st man booted. Didn't leave the Flyers with very much toughness

Guys like Recchs, Branko, and Sharp held their own well enough to make it bearable, but Chara pounding on Timander, Neil on Somik, and Fisher on Zeus was ugly

^^ I remember all that fresh, didn't watch the video Going to pat myself on the back now.

I was there and it was amazing. What I'll never forget is with a big lead I remember watching Flyers fans leaving the building because we had it in the bag with like 3-4 minutes left. That's when the **** hit the fan and it all went down for another like 30 minutes. I thought to myself afterwards how stupid everyone that left must have felt when they found out what they missed.

Brashear kicked the living hell out of Ray and that seemed to get the Sens jimmies rustled.
I was more shocked that nothing happened in the next game. like nothing.
yeah Neil was real brave jumping Somik. same with Chara on Timander.

the Philly/Binghamton AHL linebrawl was around the same time wasnt it? maybe the prior season. that one had the famous flying goalie. Little diving into a pile of players haha

I was there. Great game and great fights at the end of the game. A true Philly classic. I wish they would show it on TV more.

I was in high school at the time and I remember watching this in my bedroom, going absolutely nuts, banging my fist against the wall above my headboard in super saiyan excitement.

Best thing was everyone and their mother knew this was going to happen. Once Havlat got Recchi in the eye and nothing happened, Hitch called it. And boy did he deliver.

I think Emery was Binghamton's goalie, wasn't he? Lucky I think he squared off with one of the Vandermeers

Thanks for posting this ! This is why fighting in the NHL should not be abolished !Look at the folks in the crowd ! EVERYONE is standing and going crazy ! I remember seeing Nuns back in the 70s cheering during fights at the Spectrum...........Folks who don't like it and want it abolished should move to Europe or start watching Curling .

A huge dislike for Neil was born that day. Talk about picking your spot.

I went to the return match which was a month later. Surely the events from the previous game would manifest themselves in an exciting, physical, tough game, given Ottawa came back here to Philadelphia.

Not even close, went to the game, was bored to tears.

I was like 14 watching in my "game room" and I just remember getting so giddy with excitement every single time the puck was about to be dropped.

Also I remember Donald Brashear admitting he started the whole thing in the postgame interview and when asked why he smiled and said, "why not?"

I was in 5th grade at the time and I remember fighting with my mom push back my bedtime. The deal ended up being that I could stay up for the rest of the game. Turned out to be one of my best negotiations ever.
