Around the NHL Part IX: The Real Season Starts Now!

Devils penalty lightened from losing their likely lottery first round pick this year to having the 30th overall regardless of where they end up in the standings.

Big enough of a story and the other topic was far enough along that it probably warranted a new topic being made.....

This was what i thought as well. The penalty was really really harsh. The whole thing was silly considering a bunch of other teams had given out similar contracts but only the Devils were punished.

I thought the Devils got the penalty because they gave that contract to Kovalchuk even after the NHL had said those kind of contracts weren't OK.

Good. They should be allowed to keep whatever 1st rounder they would have gotten in their place in the standings but giving them the 30th overall is a fair compromise.

I wish the Devils still had Parise and Kovalchuk, they were my favorite eastern team for a long time because of those two guys

Good compromise. Especially since Kovy bolted for Russia.

Meh, I don't buy that logic, though. It'd be about akin to saying that someone should get a speeding or parking ticket waived or reduced if their car was later stolen. If the initial action itself warranted the punishment, something happening later shouldn't impact the severity of said punishment.

Moot point though, as I do think it was too much of a punishment to begin with even if Kovy had stayed. They effectively just signed a more egregious Hossa contract.

What a BS ruling

Devils violated the rules and did it even after NHL told them not to ,, This is absolutely horrid ruling by NHL and just sets precedent that certain owners will get favorable treatment (No surprise that Devils rich owner gets this bone after bailing team out of failing)

Disgraceful

When Hossa retires NHL will have no problem punishing Hawks or Nucks or any team that signed those legal deals

But Devils get out of all punishment ,, DOnt even need to deal with Kovalchuk contract penalty later down line with him going to KHL

The only issue I have with all of this is that the NHL made up rules as it went, and made up new rules to punish issues that weren't against the rules at the time. That's the joke.

I have a bigger issue with that than this.

A stupid punishment like that one deserved to be corrected. It's shady of course, and goes against whatever whistle blower mentality some people in the NHL had but i personally couldn't care less. When a ridiculous situation is resolved i'm rarely against it.

Shoulda done that in the first place tbh

The young captain trend is really a great thing lately--like our own Jonny Toews and Gabe Landeskog.

I hear Connor McDavid was already named captain of the Sabres.

But seriously, I think it's a good trend. The young face of the franchise who has leadership qualities.

Think it's overdone TBH. Young guys like Toews are the exception, not the rule.

There is ZERO reason why it should NOT have been MSL when Vinny left.
