I don't understand that rationale. Timonen is still an effective top four defenseman who can move the puck up the ice and give you over 20 minutes a game. If you can bring him back for around $4 million a year, you do it.

Another year at 4-5million would be fine in my book.

I think he is still our best overall defenseman, can play all situations and is better than arguably all the other options out there really. (Boyle is arguable... plays arguably easier minutes on a better team and has worse overall numbers this year and similar offensive. Markov will be silly money after a good year playing with Subban. Timonen is better defensively than both.)

It is no coincidence that his regular D partner always seemingly has a great year.

and who do you want to replace him with?

We have no one in the system that can replace him, nor is there anyone available in this year's crop of free agents that can give us what Timonen does or better. The only way to replace him is through a trade and I just can't see anything out there (a #1 defenseman) that we can make a move through a trade

Next year our blueline is projected to look like this:

Streit
Coburn
Schenn
Grossmann
Lauridson
Alt

Both Timonen and MacDonald are UFAs, while Gustafsson and Manning is RFAs. Morin could also be a factor, but I doubt it. You have to assume MacDonald will be re-signed and one of Schenn and Grossmann (hopefully the latter) will be moved in the off-season

Timonen
Coburn
Streit
MacDonald
Schenn
Gus/Lauridson/Alt/Morin/Manning/some UFA

It would be great if they could talk him into one more season. Gives Hagg and Ghost more time. I remember Frank Seravalli (take it for what you will) tweeted that Kimmo told him this is most likely the last season for him. If he doesn't have a change of heart we're gonna be pretty effed. There would be 3 options: overpay for a dman via trade or free agency (no thanks), rush one of our prospects into the show (no thank you to that either) or go with what we got and just ride it out until our prospects are ready (if they even pan out). None of those options are very attractive.

Was that during the first few months where he was very 'un-Kimmo' like?

As I get why he would then, he is obviously a proud guy, and I think he was getting frustrated with being not his usual self.

But even before the Olympics he had been playing some pretty great hockey. I think ~the start of December he has looked ~himself.

I mean, I know last year was a shortened year, but PPG wise adjusted he had one of his most productive years ever. 6th in D scoring last year!

If he keeps playing like he has recently to wrap the season it may be hard for him to walk away knowing he still has it to play in the NHL at a high level. Selanne's basically been pushing back his retirement the last few years because of that.

He has been looking his old self again the last few games, playing well on both ends of the ice and making everyone around him better players. Seem like the Olympic experience has given him a boost...

What worries me is that he had a really brutal start into the season for two consecutive years now (last season as well as the current one). They really shouldn't pay a 39-year-old 6M a season to sleep walk through first quarter of the season, play mediocre hockey the next quarter until finally getting back in shape sometime well past the midway point of the season...

He is definitely gone this year. He just wanted to do the Olympics and now that's done with, and he got his medal.

Watch all his interviews, he mentions it in almost every one.

Streit was brought in to replace his offence, we will have to sign a decent defensive D through FA.

Look for Gus to play a huge role next season in puck moving.

If he felt the Flyers were cup contenders, I think he would stay on another year.

I think it is becoming clear that Gus doesn't have a future with the Flyers. If he can't get into the lineup this year, I don't see it in the future with better prospects coming.

Well, he's not definitely gone after this season. He said right after the Olympics that he will think about his NHL career after the season is over, and he said that it depends on the motivation and he needs to be able to play at the same level he's playing now. He also mentioned that he won't come here to be the #5 or #6 defenseman who plays only 12 minutes in a game.
Source in Finnish (the last question)

Yeah...I recall him saying he was going to do this and said as long as he feels he can keep up still that he will most likely play another year. He's been doing real well and has gotten back into form. Had a rough start but if he can play like he is now, Flyers should definitely try to retain him but within reason fiscally.

Kimmo spoke this AM about his potential retirement, he said it will be evaluated in the offseason after how this season plays out. He's sticking around for a cup.

Honestly, I think if Gus is even on the team next year, he'll have the same role he has this year, which is basically nothing.

He won't even have a role let alone a huge role, regardless of how much people think he should have a role.

You leave Cousins in the AHL for a little extra room and give that money to BSchenn. $2 million seems unrealistically low to me.

We'll see, the $68M number for the cap is just a rumor at this point.

B Schenn I would say gets at least 3 mil. He's already a solid 2nd line producer, you don't get them for 2 mil. The length of his contract will determine how much more then 2 mil. Short term I could see 3 but if they want to sign him for 4 or 5 or something then he'll get more of a raise. Kinda like the JVR deal.

If Kimmo is willing, I'd throw 4 mil at him.

Ok, so now its costing more to construct a roster.

Honestly I have no idea how L. Schenn or Grossman are on this team next year. Especially if Kimmo returns. One has to go, preferably both.

Kimmo has been our best defenseman again after getting off to a slow start this year. He'll probably want to be paid like a top defenseman again. Otherwise, I hope he comes back. Kimmo is playing extremely well lately.
