Stars announced that Lehtonen's out with a concussion, btw. Thomas will have to stand tall if they want to attain a playoff spot, which is already a longshot.

I don't know if I see it that much of a longshot based on current standings. The Jets have struggled since their pre Olympics hot streak and I don't see the Yotes setting the world on fire either. Which leaves the Vancouver nuclear waste dump as the only other 8th seed challenger.

Sure, but they'd still have to jump past two teams and deal with two other teams with the same number of points as them. Odds are definitely stacked against them at this point.

Games in hand give them an advantage, but that gets eaten away if Lehtonen's down longterm.

As far as needing to hop on a backup goalies back and ride him to the playoffs, Tim Thomas is absolutely at the top of my list of guys I'd want. In case of something like this is why Dallas went out and got him.

True, you'd almost think that an oracle told 'em that Lehtonen would go down. Went from being a mild head scratcher that they got him to being possibly quite fortuitous.

As much as I love Lehtonen, it doesn't take an oracle to realize that he's going to get hurt.

DiPietro is on like the Toumu Ruutu/Mike Hampton/Mark Prior level of getting hurt

Oates continues to piss off Cap fans

Adam Oates plays it safe by having Evgeny Kuznetsov on fourth line with Jay Beagle and Tom Wilson at AM skate. #CapitalsTalk

Oates: “I think it makes sense to start him on that line no matter what in fairness to the other guys….he’s got to earn his stripes.”
Kuz on 4th line with those guys is just idiotic. Would be like Coach Q putting TT on 4th line with Bollig and Handzus if he came over

^^ I don't get it when coaches don't coach to win. This isn't Timbits hockey.

Hawk fans assure me that talented players need to earn top six minutes. Yes, this is partly tongue in cheek as I know Kuznetsov is a much, much better talent than Pirri.

I see no problem with what Oates is doing. If the kid can play, he will be up in the top 6 in a matter of time.

Seems like a lot of coaches do things like this, maybe that's why they are coaches and we are sitting at home judging them.

If you give them some slack, sure. If Kuznetsov makes some turnovers playing with a pair of plugs and you bench him and tell him that he needs to be more responsible with the puck you're stunting the growth of a kid that has all-star potential.

It's the definition of smashing a round peg into a square hole.

I can agree with that, somewhat. Depends on what the situation was when he turned the puck over.

But for a kid coming over playing his first game in NA, with all the hype around him? Give him sheltered minutes to get up to speed, learn the system, and hope he thrives so you can move him to a scoring line.

You can't just throw him into the fire. If he doesn't produce in the top 6 right away, he may lose confidence after the coach moves him out of the top 6 and it could also stunt his growth. There is no one way to bring a player into the NHL.

you ain't kidding...I mean come on, the guy gets hurt right after the trade deadline. that is nuts and bravo to Nill for addressing this need as many where questioning why he got Thomas.

I figured Lehtonen would go down at some point, but barely 5 days after the deadline is pretty insane.

Caps are in almost desperation mode to me. They have a few teams ahead of them and a few right behind them, they are looking to create a spark and try and ride it out to the playoffs.

The Caps are so up and down, not sure how this pans out for them but I honestly cannot see it turning out bad for them with the way their playoff lives are on the line right now.

Kuz on the checking line? I don't know much about him or how good he really is, but that's laughable. Top six players belong in the top six. He's not suited for the bottom six.

Seguin started on the 4th line, MacKinnon was in Colorado's bottom 6. I don't see a problem with what Oates did

Isn't Kuz a rookie technically? He still has to get acclimated to North American ice and the NHL

What I mean is they are/were 18 year olds that haven't played against men at a professional level. Kuznetsov has for years. He also won Gold at the 2011 WJC which was hosted by the United States. I don't remember, but was that played on International ice?

My point is that it should be a much easier transition for him than an 18 year old rookie.
