Meh.

I had a feeling it would happen but was hoping the would opt for an older, more experienced player.

I don't count him as incapable though I just think someone like Whitney would have been a better choice for at least one season, but that comes from personal opinion that those more adept at playmaking make better captains than those focused solely on the goal.

I hope he proves me wrong though. It would be nice to see him shine.

Seguin deserves an "A" next season. Especially after hearing the pre-game interview today regarding how he dealt with the whole Pevs situation the moment it was happening. He just talks like a leader.

EDIT: Oh and Benn has been everything you can ask for in a captain. Good on him!

Seriously, I feel like he is the ultimate captain. He may not be a great interview, but he really knows how to set the tone for the team on the ice.

I definitely think we will see Seguin wearing the "A" for this team once the veteran alternates depart.

Honestly, Seguin would be my choice for captain. Jamie is a great player, and his style is more of a tone-setter than Seguin's, but I think Seguin would have a better day-to-day command of the room. I guess on the flip side, Jamie's quiet demeanor would allow him to deliver more effective messages when the team needs them. Still would rather Seguin have it.

Eh. I view them as 1A and 1B already anyways. They're both going to be our leaders for many years to come. Segs definitely will have an A soon enough.

I don't think it makes a huge difference who is captain or alternate captain. To me, Jamie fits the mold because he is a tone setter and his entire career has been in Dallas. He was the guy before Segs got here. However, leadership will have an effect on the locker room regardless of the letter that is assigned to the player. I think we can already tell Seguin has a leadership role in the locker room, and he doesn't have a letter on his sweater.

I think we often tend to overstate the importance of the captaincy. That being said, I take Benn as my captain over Seguin every time.

He's set for a career year too. Next point will match his career high, and next goal with be a new career record.

Yup, we really have no idea how it is inside the locker room but on the ice Benn is the leader of this team.

He's stepped it up to Toews level.

“He’s had some disappointments in his career, but I think he’s proved that when he’s gotten in tough situations, playoff situations, you can check his numbers, he’s rose to those occasions,” Ruff said. “He wasn’t invited to Canada’s camp, and there was a reason for it. He worked his way onto that list. He started at the bottom there, and he worked his way up from there again. Those are all tremendous accomplishments on his part.”
Oh, how I'd love to know what that reason was.

Pretty much answers the questions from Ducks fans about why Benn didn't or won't fight Maroon, as if such banal questions need answering.

Is there an obvious answer to this that I'm missing? I still don't know why he wasn't.

Kinda slightly off-topic but it can be quick and I don't wanna derail another thread.

How did Seguin not make team canada?

Neither player had the right high profile. Reputations matter a lot and look at all the nonsense that was involved with the American team selection. With Canada's depth they can get by without Stamkos and they almost didn't take PK Subban for crying out loud.

Fair enough. Worked either way for them

Ah, gotcha. I thought head coaches/management would be a little beyond that, but I guess they're human after all.

Crosby Toews Tavares and Bergeron with Giroux being left behind made it tough for Seguin to crack the roster. I'd say Seguin was probably 6 or 7 at center on the depth chart for Canada. Hard to believe that they left the number 3 and 4 scorers in the league at home but the formula for success was size, speed and solid defending for Canada.

I'm not convinced Seguin will be able to crack the 2018 roster when you see Crosby Toews Tavares ahead of him and guys like MacKinnon and potentially McDavid making cases to be a part of that team.

After game 6, Jamie went out of his way following the handshake line to shake the hands of every single official on the ice. Just once again showed me how much of a leader this guy is.
