He could be a #6 / pressbox on the right team. I'm rooting for him to just take a few more strides in ability and settle in. I'm hoping age helps him.

In 15 games up with the Flyers, he had 2 goals, 1 assist, and +/- was 0. That doesn't tell the true story as he had some good moments, but looked uncomfortable out there on some shifts and got beaten a few times. Not sure how much that shook him off the Flyers. It didn't scream "ready."

But we're also talking about a team that can't get Gus on the ice.

And Mez, and I gripe about him, has played well recently.

No reason to bump imo. Until Laughton plays in the NHL, there is no comparison to make. Maatta is second in rookie defensive scoring. Made some mistakes today, of course, but he's already showing some upside at the NHL. Something Laughton has not had the opportunity to demonstrate.

there really is no comparison at this point. We drafted an inferior player at a position we are deep at, instead of a superior player by consensus at a position of desperate need.

dude chill out jfc he has like no real NHL experience, just because maatta made the jump a bit earlier doesnt mean he's destined to be more valuable than laughton

No, but the way people talk about him around here you would have thought he would have had a better showing than he did today. He was lost on the third & fourth goals today.

It really had nothing to do with Laughton.

All I am saying is that Maatta is better than Laughton , and he plays a position that we are weak at. Laughton can be a good player in the future, but how high can his ceiling be on a team with 3 centers better than him?

Maata doesn't have Norris trophy potential. I laughed when people on HFboards were saying that. Having said that, I'm not trying to diminish the kids talent. I see him as a good 2/3 defenseman. He's one of these poised players that quietly can go about his business. He just doesn't have that wow factor like most Norris caliber defenseman have. He has no traits that really just stand out. He's just solid all around. A big weakness I noticed from him is he shys away from contact. He has to start getting more used to the physicality of the NHL or teams will start employing a hard nosed game againts him. He's still young and has a good base to build from.

Still on that day I still wanted them to draft Maata. Scott Laughtons offense will never translate to the pros. IMO he's our most overrated prospect.

right now there is no discussion on who the better player is. Hopefully laughton can make it a discussion in the future.

It's ridiculous how quick some of you are to decide which 19 year old will have the better career.

Four years from now Maatta might be a Carle clone, while Laughton turns out to be a Couts clone.

Think I'd wait a few years before making a final judgment.

no one can predict that. My own personal opinion is based off of this current season.

That's great but the thread title is stupid then. How can you say the Flyers blew it when Maata hasn't completed one full season.

Because I would rather have the NHL defenseman, than the ohl center.

Sorry, I'm taking McDavid over Grossmann, all day, every day and twice on Sunday.

I think Laughton is gonna be really good. I'm afraid we won't have the space for him when he's pushing for a roster spot though.

He'll probably be able to find a spot as a 3C eventually, but who knows, maybe if Couts and G are put on a line together in the future, we might see a second line with Brayden Schenn and Laughton. This is many years down the road tho...

Anyways, I think Laughton is gonna be another Mike Richards type player and that's exactly the kind of players we should continue to cultivate here. While I wanted them to take Maata like everyone else, I've come to like the Laughton pick. Especially if it meant us choosing defense the following year when we drafted Morin and Hagg. I'd rather have those two over Maata.
