Earthquake During Game

Seeing as most of us in the LA/Anahiem area were woken up by an (moderate) earthquake this morning, I was wondering if there has ever been a quake during a game.

What would protocol be with that situation?

Protocol?

Generalized panic and rushing around to no apparent purpose, and a lot of innocents injured and maimed.

Kind of like the Kings' power play.

In a rink like the Bell Center you might not even notice

Is it sad that I dont even notice them anymore? I'm awake and didnt even notice it.
That 5.0 a few weeks ago (the same size as the one back east a few years ago that caused all the craziness) gave me a "huh, earthquake" reaction.

Pretty sure play would stop if it was a big one and resume once it had stopped unless it was big enough to cause concern for structural integrity. Unless it was back east, then it would cause a statewide emergency and the game would be cancelled because of a 3.0

In all seriousness though, it would have to be pretty big to even feel it during the game, let alone cause real concern.

Probably similar to what happened in the 1989 earthquake that happened during the World Series game. Game cancelled, get everyone safe, and when safe to do so, get out and home safely. Simple as that.

Not an earthquake, but during the AHL Western Conference Finals last season, Oklahoma City came under a tornado warning, and everyone (players, fans, etc.) were rushed to the underground parking area until the warning was lifted. The game was postponed until the next day.

That was my first earthquake since moving to LA six weeks ago. It was terrifying, mostly because it woke me from my sleep and that is always startling. But I doubt it would have been very noticeable in a loud, packed arena during a hockey game.

If a very big EQ hit during a game, there would be attempts to follow whatever protocol the arena has in place, but fans would probably be panicking and people would be injuring each other as they rush to the exits.

Happened twice before. When Darius Kasparaitis hit Eric Lindros and when Scott Stevens hit Eric Lindros.

There actually was a small earthquake during a Kings game at Staples Center 4 or so years ago, there's a YouTube of it somewhere.

It gets worse when earthquakes hit regions that don't normally get them - I saw an article this morning about a magnitude 2.9 earthquake that struck happened in the middle of Lake Ontario, 25 miles off shore.

Enormous who cares.

I believe it was against the Ducks if I remember correctly. There is no reason why I would have been watching a Kings game otherwise, but I remember the announcers making a comment about it.

Edit:

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
On January 8, 2009, the Ducks and Kings met for a mid-season game at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The game featured an earthquake midway through the 1st period, felt by some of the players and also the press writers and fans in attendance. The game was not delayed, however.

Yep, I was sitting in the upper-deck for that wondering what was going on. Shook for a good 30 seconds or so if I recall correctly. Once we realized what it was, there was actually a good amount of cheering, haha. Players looked pretty terrified though I want to say it was a 4-5 point something, so very moderate, and during a stoppage in play. Now a 6+, or during play, you'd definitely see some emergency procedures.

Yeah, if it was minor I think they'd stop the game, make sure everyone is safe and then resume play when it was over. If it was major I think they'd rush to make sure everyone is safe first and then get them to a safe location.

It's only news because of where the epicenter was. I was awoken by it, but I'm only about 7 miles from where it was centered.

We get earthquakes pretty much constantly, but they're usually not based right in the middle of the population base and easily ignored.

I'm cranky. I couldn't get back to sleep after it

Indeed. If this earthquake happened during a Kings game I'm sure play would have been halted for a couple minutes while everything was checked out and then resumed. A bigger one...well...probably panic and destruction. See: 1989 World Series Earthquake

If it's in Vancouver, or a California team's game, maybe even in Phoenix, unless it's a "big one", I can see play going on. But if it's anywhere east of the rockies I can see mass hysteria.

As for this one, like many others in the area, I slept through it. Of course I live far enough away that it most likely barely registered, and if I was wakened by it, it was probably gentle enough to rock me back to sleep.

I remeber Bob joking it was a Dustin Brown hit, not an earthquake
