Jere Karalahti. One of the best d-man I ever saw from Finland. Tough as nails, skilled and had it all. To bad he didn't prioritize hockey and liked drugs.

Gilbert Brule.

Looked so promising in the WHL, had all of the talent in the world.

I also thought Pajaarvi was going to be a stud. Same with Filatov.

Gilbert Brule, Nik Zherdev, Nikita Filatov, Magnus Paajarvi (to an extent), Jiri Tlusty (to an extent though he's redeemed himself in other ways), Justin Pogge , Patrick White, I honestly though Angelo Esposito would destroy all his doubters... whoops

Both those guys played in the AHL at a time I was a season ticket holder to the Lowell Lock Monsters. Saw both of them play a lot and I have to tell you..... neither one ever looked like even a marginal NHLer to me. I don't know what they looked like in their jr systems, but both looked slow, lazy and disinterested.

Brendl did have a nice shot and I remember one game I saw him play when he was completely nothing... just floating around all game invisible, and then in the 3rd his center won a clean faceoff and he just rocketed a wrister high glove side. Showed no emotion or anything and went back to floating.

Almost all the '99 draftees... Stefan, Brendl, Connolly and Pyatt notably.

Alexander Burmistrov.

When I watched him play, he seemed like he had the skill to be a great NHL player. But he fizzled out quickly and bolted to Russia.

Chris DiDomenico.

Played in the WJC's, put up 35 points in 15 games during the QMJHL playoffs, was poised for a huge year in 2009-10 but suffered a devastating leg injury and never really recovered.

Always thought he would be a Perron-type of player in the NHL....now he's ripping up the Italy league.

I was convinced he was the next St. Louis, turned into the next Niclas Berfgors.

when jeff o'neill first came up with the whalers i was convinced he would be the future of the franchise for years to come, never really panned out though

stan chistov is another guy who had a decent rookie year but just never did much after

my biggest in recent years though has got to be angelo esposito, i was convinced he was going to become a star in the NHL and he never even played a single game

I agree with Hickey and Teubert, but it's a little pre mature to say Forbort will be a bust when he's in his first year of professional hockey in the AHL.

Injuries shouldnt count in the bust category. Pat Peake had his legs blown off due to an icing, Mueller had his head smashed in by Rob Blake. Filatov is a good choice for a bust.

Oh man...here goes.
  • Denis Shvidki
  • Kris Beech
  • Erik Christensen
  • Aleksey Morozov
  • Milan Kraft
  • Niklas Hagman
  • Jaroslav Svejkovsky
  • Radek Bonk
  • Robert Dome
  • Tomas Surovy
  • Alexander Svitov
  • Alek Stojanov
  • Brett Lindros
  • Oleg Kvasha
  • Thomas Hickey
  • Chad Kilger
  • David Tanabe
  • Krys Kolanos
  • Peter Mueller
  • Wojtek Wolski
  • Enver Lisin
  • Pavel Brendl
  • Jack Skille
  • Cam Barker
  • Nail Yakupov
  • Jason Bonsignore
  • Rico Fata
  • Nikita Filatov
  • Patrik Stefan
  • Maksim Mayorov
  • Konstantin Koltsov
  • Daniel Tkaczuk
  • Steve Eminger
  • Alex Daigle
  • Brandon Sutter
  • Jordan Staal
  • Jared "The best one" Staal
  • Rick DiPietro
  • Dan Blackburn

I am missing a few, some were highly touted picks, others were guys that I thought were going to be good to great and never got there.

I think the saddest ones, out of my list, is Blackburn and Dome (one worked out too hard and messed up his shoulder, the other basically lost his family and Craig Patrick's brother destroyed his potential). Also Kolanos, I remember his rookie year, he was having an amazing year and an early favorite for the Calder, then I think he got rocked with a concussion and that was it, he never ever recovered from it, he's barely a 4th liner at the NHL level and an AHL journeyman, whereas before, this guy could have been a top 6C.

Injuries derailed his future, sad really, the guy had the heart to keep trying but his body just wasn't having it. Having multiple knee surgeries can kill a career. He now plays on the same team as his brother, HC Bolzano.

I thought Brule was going to be a legit top 6 C as well, not sure what happened to him with the Jackets, but back then, it was a common theme with the way they ran that team and their development, so many lost prospects.

As for Paajarvi, the damage done by the Oilers is pretty significant, but I think he might be able to rebound. But then again, I also thought Grachev would turn things around with the Blues and that never worked out either.

almost forgot oleg tverdovsky.

they were calling him "oleg orr" after anaheim took him #2 overall in '94. had a few decent seasons with the ducks and coyotes but definitely didn't turn out like the big time defenseman many thought he would

he did help the ducks acquire the best player in franchise history though

Way to sneak Yakupov in there HoG. Seriously the kid is 19/20. Maybe wait a few more years on that one.

Radek Bonk has multiple mentions despite he played close to 1,000 NHL games.

Same goes for Scott Lachance (~900 games). He was right up there with Niedermayer and Lindros on '91 draft, but career never took off the way most expected.

Still, I would not call anyone who can make close to thousand career games a failure - no matter what expectations.

If they do not post numbers worthy of their draft position before their ELC is up they are a bust according to HF.

Forgot about Grachev, lots of people around here thought he would be a big time stud. Maksim Mayorov is another one.
