Are we good enough for Stanley Cup run?

Pacioretty-Desharnais-Vanek (DD playing with 2x 30-40 goal scorers)
Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher (EGG kid line)
Briere-Plekanec-Gionta (Oldguys line, Dany is a superb playoff performer)
Moen-Prust-Weise (defensive/tough line)
White, Bournival
x-Bourque (scratched forever)

Subban-Gorges
Emelin-Markov
Tinordi-Murray
Weaver-Boullion
Beaulieu

Price
Budaj

I think if we ride a hot streak and Price plays at a high level, who knows. Our defense would look elite if Ryan Mcdonagh was around.

And that's the big issue: our defense. I don't know if they're good enough to handle the grind of the playoffs. Even with Gorges in the line up, its a pretty decent sized drop-off after Subban and Markov.

But we have the best goalie in the world. So who knows what could happen.

Depends on Price.

Where Carey Price goes, the Habs go

In the east, Montreal is good enough to make the Cup finals.

With Therrien at helm? Doubt it.

The man has the tactical nous of a drunken rhino playing scrabble.

The East is wide open. We actually DO have some elite talent.

Too many holes though and one of the worst coaches in the league... so I'm going to say its very, very unlikely.

But its not as unlikely as it would've been in years past. Vanek, Plecs, Subban, Markov, Price, Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Max... that's a good core to work with. Vanek makes a huge difference.

Our coach is a moron though so...

1. The East is weak
2. We have Price
3. We have depth and reasonably balanced roster

I think there's a shot, but I think we probably have too many smaller players, and are short 1 top 4 d man.

We have ok scoring and checking depth and some bigger/tougher players throughout the lineup. But the PP has to pick it up and the 3rd line needs to start producing. One key thing we have this year is our depth. If players get hurt or are underperforming, we have options. We even have depth in goal, along with a very confident world class goalie.

That being said, whatever could go right, could go wrong, so who knows? I think we're better prepared to make a run this year than last.

Was just coming to post this. We're doing well in the past week, so we're now a cup contender. We do poorly in the next 2-4 games and we'll be back to "missing the playoffs and we may as well resign Gionta this team is a sucky bunch of midgets boohoo"

We gor a shot...just like everyone else....i'll tell u though...its not too many teams that have a goalie like carey price and we know what goalies can do...our problem forever has been getting bombarded with a ridiculous amount of injuries every ****ing year if for once we can keep a full roster and some other teams can fall apart in front of us (much like the year boston won) then we have a shot

On paper, Montreal have a very good team and with goalie like Carey Price, wow.

Pacioretty - Desharnais - Vanek.
Brière - Plekanec - Gallagher.
Galchenyuk - Eller - Gionta.
Moen - Prust - Weise/White/Bournival.

Gorges - Subban.
Emelin - Markov.
Tinordi - Murray/Weaver/Bouillon.

With trade Vanek, Montreal can be score goal and in playoff.. you want just one goal in overtime and player like Pacioretty/Vanek... can be score this goal.

really really don't like the prospect of playing Philly which could be a possibility. If we could beat them then I'd have tons of confidence.

Also dread playing Toronto even though they don't seem to own us like they have in years past. I just couldn't take losing to them but it would be a hell of a series.

If Gorges is back and Emelin can be more Jekyll than Hyde and Tinordi can continue to gain confidence then our D wouldn't be in too rough shape. Emelin really has to be Jekyll in like 90% of the games.

If Eller and Galchenyuk can pick it up that would be huge.

It's really all about getting the best of our players. I could see Gionta going back with Pleks and the EGG line being reunited. If we get playoff Briere then Gallagher could work his wonders with Eller and Galch.

Lot of ifs but this is the best shot we've had in years.

Arguably good enough for an eastern conference run. Not good enough to compete with best western teams for sure.

ah back to normal

Typical thread after habs play well lol.

We will see how the team looks when the real season starts. They are looking better, but still work to do.

Yeah, all things considered I know OP didn't mean to time it this way but this thread just screams "BIPOLAR HABS FANS".

The issue with this team isn't talent, and hasn't been talent for some time now. The issue is coaching. We have a motivated, tightly-knit lockerroom with some studs at every position. We don't have the greatest of depth but it's definitely better than most, and our team, overall, has quite a bit of experience in the playoffs.

The problem falls to coaching and tactics, it's coaching which can make Plekanec look and play like a one-legged Mike Peca circa 2008. It's coaching which makes an otherwise minute-chewing Lars Eller lose all effectiveness. It's coaching which neuters PK Subban, which designs the most static, illogical PP scheme, and so on.

So on a good night, when things go our way, we look damn fine. On a bad night we look, well, really bad. And that's when you know it's not the talent but the coaching. We don't have a system, we're relying on breaks and "effort" to win - and that's the most unpredictable and statistically regressive way of building a team.

My hope is as followed...
  1. We make a good show in the playoffs (Hard fought 2-3 round exit)
  2. This convinces Vanek to re-sign
  3. We start next season off slow, which gets Therrien fired
  4. We hire a good coach and proceed to be awesome

Or you know, we win the cup. That'd be great too.

Even last night the weak link was exposed: They are sloppy in their defensive zone. Its not necessarily their D men who are responsible but the forwards who are standing around puck watching and not covering a man or clearing rebounds. All 3 goals last night were entirely preventable and not Price's fault. Elite teams will take full advantage of this flaw in the playoffs. If we are to have a chance at a run, Price will have to steal several games to bail out his team's lack of backchecking.

For poops & giggles a comparison to the 2009-10 team that almost made it

On paper current team has more depth and skill up front and that's not including Parros, White, Bournival & Bourque

Maybe a slight edge to the depth of their D but we have the better 1st pairing

End of the day the red ones will push us over the top

Price=Halak (as good as Price is Jaro was on another planet so I'll call it a draw)
Subban>Subban
Markov>Markov (missed most of PO)
Pleks=Pleks
Moen=Moen
Gionta<Gionta
Gorges=Gorges
Pacioretty=Cammy
Desharnais=Gomez (back before Gomer went MIA)
Emelin<Hamrlik
Galchenyuk=AK46
Boullion=MAB
Eller=Moore
Prust=Lapierre
Weise=Pyatt
Tinordi=Spacek
Vanek>Pouliot
Gallagher>Metropolit

Murray<Gill
Briere>Darche
Weaver=O'Byrne

Anything can happen in the East. Anything.

I'd like to see more balanced scoring, but a healthy roster can do some damage. I don't think there's anyone in the locker room too concerned with the idea of playing the Pens or Bruins. I'm least nervous about those prospects myself.

If I'm not mistaken, were the playoffs to start right now, we'd play the Flyers. They're rolling right now. They can score some goals. They're big. Habs don't always play them well. It would be a tough match up.

The Blue Jackets are breathing down their necks, and playing as well as any team in the league right now. Their level of confidence, and the 'unknown' factor scare me more than playing the Pens and Bruins. A bit of the "Devil you know." I guess.

If we can get a second line to produce consistently, we'll be very tough to beat imo.
