HFNHL: Coyotes utilize waivers to clear cash

With the Coyotes now out of playoff contention, the team has chosen to waive Martin Brodeur and Vaclav Prospal in an attempt to further improve the team's dangerous financial situation.

"We had to move some good prospects that we didn't want to move in order to get ourselves back into a functioning financial situation. We had to compromise value for cash in multiple deals this season, and now, with the organization out of the playoffs we have decided to waive two good players who will not be returning to our roster in order to help put ourselves in a more functioning financial situation in order to make this team more competitive in the future. It was something we considered around trade deadline when none of the 29 teams made an offer for Brodeur. However our first goal was to make the playoffs and atleast make the risk we took count for the franchise. It didn't happen and now that we're out of the running, we felt this was a necessary move to ensure the viability of the franchise."

The Coyotes stand to gain well over 1.2 mil from this move and will recall Steve Mason and Kevin Westgarth in their place. In addition Brandon Mashinter will play the next game to fill in for Phil Kessel who is day-to-day with an injury.

You didn't post lines yesterday did you? I don't recall seeing them so just thought I'd double check to make sure something didn't go wrong on my end.

Each day they don't hit waivers gives up some savings. As it stands today these two only have $1,184,615 remaining on their deals. Taking into account the salary replacing them you stand to save about $700,000, that is, if someone claims both players. If not you will actually end up spending more money having Westgarth at full salary rather than 10%.

I still don't know that it's kicked in quite yet, or will even kick in by FA this year, but managing salaries better given the new one-way contracts will be something all of us need to pay much more attention to going forward.
