Thomas Vanek isn't the dominant force we expected him to be. (Update: sick/hurt?)

This ranks as one of the dumbest threads on this Board ever.

The Bruins are the best defensive team in the League. We win in a shootout and you gripe about Tomas Vanek?

Seriously. This is sad.

Give him time. He has only been on the team a few weeks. I think he will be great in the playoffs.

Not really a good comparison, Hossa is a dominant two way player while Vanek brings pretty much no defensive value. Vanek is less Hossa lite than Cammalleri++.

Well and I would have figured that it was common knowledge Vanek is a one dimensional player, he isn't a two way guy and he's not suddenly going to become one at 30 years old. You'd think this fanbase would know how valuable that kind of player can be in the spring, what with a deep playoff run not too long ago on the back of goaltending and Cammalleri getting red hot.

he needs more time, this is his 3rd team in a year and a third system he needs to adjust to not to mention new line mates for the third time. Judge this guy come playoff time. I like what I've seen so far.

Strong on the puck and likes to shoot.

Yeah he is a bit invisible but it takes only him 1 shot to make the difference thats how good of a shooter he is. Cant wait till he gets more chances

He was awful tonight. But let's not generalize because of one horrible game. This guy is going to score goals and that is all it matters.

He's Thomas Vanek, not Steven Stamkos. He's not gonna light it up every game FFS

What did people expect? The guy is a sniper that isn't going to grind, back check, hit, etc...

I'll take my chances on Vanek, if he'll sign. No hesitation at all, frankly. The guy's not just hands, he's a bull. Once he finds chemistry with a center (Galchenyuk perhaps, next year) he's good for 25-35 for the next few years. And this team could seriously compete in that window, if they can add pieces like Vanek.

MB did a hell of a job at the deadline this year. May well come to naught, but he gave the coach some useful pieces this year.
Marian Hossa is elite defensively and on-par with Toews in 2-way game.

Don't ever do this comparison again.

Vanek is a floater, and sadly we need floaters on the team. We can't all have top 10 offensive forwards.

Could've had both, really. As soon as I heard he was on waivers I was doing flips at the office telling everyone we need to grab him. Young prospect with an outstanding rookie season under his belt, and for free? Yes please.

Hard for him to do much on a night light tonight.

I think he has been really good since the trade.

Dude is a big time floater but he is something every team needs a game breaker, just like some have already said reminds me of cammy or kovalev I will put up with it as long as he scores, has 4 goals in last 3 games

you might have a point there although Iggy got to the cup final and couldn't win it, either way i'll take Vanek's scoring, something this team really needs

The last time we had a Vanek bash fest thread he scored 3 goals. Expect him to pot 2 tommorow.

The guy has an incredible shot, on the shootout he lost the puck a bit or that puck was going top shelf. he can score from tight areas or in traffic, if this guy gets 5 shots a game thats where he will be a 40 goals scorer. Plus he can accelerate someitmes to take a good slapper. His snap and slap are better then his wrist shot, I love this guy hope we re-sign him badly.

Mods should close any thread where the OP doesn't respond in the first two pages. It's like a hit and run. As every other reasonable person has been saying, this is how Vanek is. He's a pure goal scorer with a big body.

He's not great defensively, not fast, but big, strong, experienced in front of the net. He will always be a scoring threat... even when he isn't playing a good game. The habs have no one who can do what he does.

I can't imagine going into the playoffs without Vanek. He hasn't done a lot so far but his presence makes opposing teams worry.

and his passing and offensive IQ are very high end.

If this is considered a bad game for Vanek then i'm thrilled personally.

Whole game was spent in our zone and Davey never winning his faceoffs. You cannot generate anything offensively with that.

People rag on Pacioretty for poor play on D, but Pacioretty does backcheck and tries. This is pretty much the Vanek Sabres fans know about. Immensely skilled in the O-zone, but don't count on him working hard greater than 70% of the time. Hossa is a terrible comparison because Hossa does play a complete game now and also backchecks.
