Please, Please stop living in the past. We can speculate all we want about what could have been but the fact is that it didn't happen. Sather made what he thought was the best decision at the time, he has been raked over the coals for it. I'm not a Sather fan, but please can we stop dwelling on this debacle. I have seen no fewer than 10 threads on this very topic (or some slight variation of it) in the past 8 months. It's over, let's move on folks.
supporting the fact that sometimes you just gotta give guys a shot. If they are working hard and show tehy want to learn, then give them the time to prove you are worthless.
That's not saying that Rita will be Doan but as Slats just illustrated, it was a long time before Doan was even Doan
As much as I like what Pisani can bring in a certain role, doesn't make much sense to me to play him every game when you invested a 1st round selection in Rita. Same goes for playing Chimera over Rita.
I just wanted to post this ..ime still bitter that with the draft in Edmonton ( i still have my draft hat) that the so called GENIOUS passed on local kid and Blazer superstar Doaner .
Maybe theyd be a powerhouse team now .
I believe we have read a few stories by GuyF in the past few months that indicate that that decision was made unanimously by the scouting staff. I don't know why GM's get credit and blame for drafting day decisions when their only real input is a) who they hired as chief scout and b) what need they tell their chief scout is the highest priority for that pick. Unless you were talking about Barry Fraser? In any case . . . it is time to let it go. I understand that hydroponics can help with this.
I would turn this into a Rita thread..but we already have one of those. They made the pick, at the time, it was a good pick, and there is no guarantee that we would have the today's version of Doan anyways.

True. But then again you don't play a 1st round pick just because he's a first rounder. Maybe its just better to realize your mistakes and move on. Obviously this doesn't apply to Rita since he's never really been given a shot, but its the point of the whole thought experiment: when do you give up and when do you cut losses? Isbister's in the same pool. When do you stop giving him prime ice time and send him packing? Just because you traded your #1 D for him doesn't mean he gets a free ride forever.
I think the Oilers are better than they were before. Maybe Zholtok has a bit of Satan syndrome in the way he was dumped, but generally they're giving the players some time to work and moving out veterans and going with youth. Horcoff, Chimera, and Pisani are signed and in the club instead of your Murrays, Griers, and Keanes. It took Chimera and Pisani quite some time to get to the bigs. I know Rita's contract is up soon but couldn't he just end up basically Chimera's route?
but Rita didn't exactly disappoint in this first two years in A and if he had a bad camp this season, then so what? But your point on Chimera is decent and hopefully he plays out the rest of this season and then Rita get his place next year.
I would say Izzy is done after this season, especially with themoney he's making.
I would have to disagree on that one. Izzy is here for at least another year. Too many signs of what he could be to give up yet.
I'd also figure that it's about 80/20 for Izzy to be back next year. He was set back by injuries early in the year, but he's shown flashes of a kind of player the Oilers could really use. Plus he's a "local" boy, and Lowe tends to collect those kinds of players more than trade 'em away...
what kind of money do you think he'll make next season and where do you see him fitting in? Surely next year the top two RWs will be Hemsky and Dvorak. And the top two left wings will be Torres and Smyth because the only other option is Mihknov shows up to be the 2nd line LW and Torres and Moreau round out the bottom.
We still have Pisani on the right side and Salmo pretty close to beating down the door.
I've seen signs from Izzy too but if he's back he has to be top six and he has to take a paycut.
Ime sorry ..i am always living in the past ..its just i was so hyped that the Oil would draft him ....its a fault i have .I am the type of guy who changes a light bulb and then talks about how great the old one was .
We could have got Brodeur or Tkachuck in 90.
We could have got Palffy in 91
We could have got Carter in 92
We did good in 93 with Arnott, but we could have got Allison
We could have got O'Neill in 94, but we did good at pick 6
We could have got Iginla instead of Doan or Kelly in 95
96 was the worst draft ever!
We could have got in Afinigenov in 97
We could have got Gagne in 98
We could have got Williams in 2000
So in other words we could do this for days, I know I do. But what's the point?
Exactly, hindsight is 20-20, if people could predict the future there wouldn't be much point in drafts... Just assign the best players to the teams in the proper order, that's what makes drafts so intriguing.
