The only negative I can really think of is his skating. It's merely average. He's sort of good in all areas but great in none. Vermont has been a **** team since he's been on it and he's been one of the best players since he joined it.

It's honestly impressive that he put up the numbers he did. The team is that bad.

Oh great.

So even if he turns out to be a top-six player, people will still want to replace him with Jussi Jokinen?

FYI, if you're really curious, you can watch free archived UVM games vs NU here, just navigate to the on demand tab and select men's ice hockey from the drop-down box. McCarthy had 3+1 with 14 SOG in the two January games.

I'm reading such glowing things about these undrafted guys out of college, I'm suspicious of WHY they're undrafted. If they're that good, why are we able to pick them up for nothing?

There's a finite amount of draft picks and a finite amount of contract spots.

because they werent nearly the players they are today 2,3,4 years ago when they were draft eligible.

But, I don't know how to think of these guys. They're being described as serious possibilities to make the NHL, but 6th and 7th rounders are taken before them.

Well, for example, Haggerty had 15 points in 35 games in his last draft eligible season. Since, he has 69 points in 71 games.

McCarthy had 41 points in 76 games before his draft eligibility expired. Since, 73 points in 76 games.

But you would be wise to exercise caution for sure.

How good of an athlete is when they're 17 years old isn't the best determinant of how good a player is going to be when they're 25. Some of these guys also don't receive attention because of where they play hockey when they're younger. I'm not sure how USNTDP guys fly under the radar but most teams would rather take an average OHL player than an elite US high schooler. Hell, look at Kreider. There's no doubt he'd be selected in the top 10 given his size and speed if he had played CHL hockey.

Not for a lack of interest. He signed with the WHA (which had no rule against signing under 20s), and then that WHA team got rolled into the NHL.

As for the rangers, i see signing like this as free 3rd round picks.

You have a better feel for the player at age 20-22 then at 17-18 than you do at the draft, so i feel to call them worse than 7th rounders because they were passed up when they were teenagers.

A lot can happen between 18 and 22, and if a 22 y/o is still considered a player worth picking up, thats better than a 18 y/o you take a flyer on in the 7th round. Less unpredictability . not eliminated. just less.

Gretzky not being drafted doesn't count since he played professionally in the WHA before he was old enough to be eligible for the NHL draft, but the point is taken.

McCarthy wasn't an overwhelming player when he played for the NTDP (in the NAHL, mind you, not the USHL like they do now) and had some weaknesses in his game. Since his time in college he has matured and rounded out his game nicely to the point where he belongs in professional hockey now. On top of the games that were already posted in here, McCarthy had a GREAT game against BU earlier this season. He's pretty much the entire reason they even were in the tournament this year.

Part of why he was "underwhelming" on the NTDP (which I disagree with, anyway) was that it was a deep as **** team and he wasn't a first liner. He never should have been undrafted.

So potential steal? He's a center right?

For whatever it's worth, I just looked up the rankings on SBNation. They had Greg Carey 84th and Ryan Haggerty 54th on the same list where they have McCarthy 30th. For additional context, the top 5 were Hayes, Kerdiles, Lucia, Olofsson and Schmaltz. Skjei was 16th. It was published in early March.

Rangers have signed Haggerty and McCarthy. They also went hard after Van Brabant and Matt Carey (that we know of)--so the Rangers are making up for the lack of draft picks by picking up older but still very young free agents. Some of these guys turn out to be great players. There are still a number of pretty interesting undrafted free agents out there. Hopefully they'll bag another or two or three. There's almost always someone who goes to a team when he was supposed to be signed by someone else. San Jose and the Blackhawks were the teams mentioned for McCarthy.

As a UVM graduate in resent that

Graduated in 2012, haven't watched him since then. Was always a talented player. Hopefully he does well in Hartford next year.

Good depth signing for the prospect pool. I'm in favor of going with the US program graduates, I think they're doing a good job at turning out players who have alot to offer.

I like these type of signings especially after dealing the 5th and 7th rounders for Diaz and Carcillo

Need another couple of players signed IMO. Still very thin in a couple of areas
