Cap space/Payroll/IR question

Simple CBA question.

I am under the assumption that when a player is on IR, his salary is paid through some disability plan and not by the team. Consequently, his salary is not counted against the cap when on IR. Is this true?

I hear about Kesler and Vancouver so that's where I'm getting this thought.

How does this involve the Caps???

Well Zednik, a high salaried player was on IR for 20+ games I think. Kolzig has the potential to be gone 1/4 of the season. If my assumption is correct, then wouldn't our cap number drop by about 2M+ and the actual pay from Ted drop the same? It would allow capital to be invested into next years team instead of paying the guys on IR.

Kesler has been placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR), which effectively takes his contract off the books in terms of cap ramifications for the rest of the season.

AFAIK, no Caps players have been on LTIR this year.

And I think teams still have to pay the player, not the insurance. I always thought that insurance was just in case the player was injured and could not play anymore. Like a career ending injury, but I could be wrong.
