Pens sign Wilson
Quote:
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Scott Wilson to a two-year entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive Vice President and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract will begin with the 2014-15 season and run through the 2015-16 campaign.

Wilson, 21, played the past three seasons with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. This year, despite battling injuries, he totaled 19 points (7G-12A) and was plus-5 in 31 games, helping the River Hawks advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Quote:
Drafted by the Penguins in the seventh round (209th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Wilson had produced back-to-back 38-point campaigns for UMass-Lowell prior to this year that included 16 goals and 22 assists both years.
Quote:
The 5-foot-11, 184-pound Wilson skated in 109 career contests for the River Hawks, scoring 39 goals, 56 assists and 95 points while finishing plus-22.

That list is limited to prospects who need to be signed by August 15th who would otherwise become free agents.

I could see Colorado signing Condon. Would be shocked if Washington signs Stefishen.

Devils sign Ben Johnson to ATO, to finish the season with Albany. 3rd round pick in 2012.

Johnson was the one charged with sexual assault in a nightclub last year.

Renaud Lavoie says the Senators are trying to trade Francois Brassard's rights.

Quote:
Senators are trying to trade the rights of G François Brassard. If they can't, Brassard will be available for the June draft in Philly.
https://twitter.com/renlavoietva/sta...38091428724736

The Sens (Or whomever should they acquire his rights) have until June 1st to get Brassard under contract, otherwise he will go back into the draft.

What would a team trade for him? A sixth or seventh or futures?

Sounds about right, here's some similar trades in recent years.

2011: NY Rangers trade Ethan Werek to Phoenix for Oscar Lindberg
2011: Calgary trades Tim Erixon and a 5th (Shane McColgan) to NY Rangers for Roman Horak, 2nd (Markus Granlund) and a 2nd (Tyler Wotherspoon.
2010: Phoenix trades Jared Staal to Carolina for 5th (Louis Domingue)
2010: NY Islanders trade Jyri Niemi to NY Rangers for a 6th (Tanner Lane)
2007: Columbus trades Adam McQuaid to Boston for 5th (Jamie Benn)
2007: NY Rangers trade Ryan Russell to Montreal for 7th (David Skokan)

The Erixon deal doesn't really apply because he was a really good high pick who didn't want to report so his value was higher.

So it varies from a 5th to a 7th.

per capgeek, Anaheim has signed Jaycob Megna to an ELC. Megna, 21, was a 7th round pick in 2010 (210th overall). Last season he had 0 goals and 10 assists in 32 games with Nebraska-Omaha in the NCAA.

The interesting thing about all of those is the guys that were traded in virtually every case turned out to be flops in comparison with what they felt they were worth. They have combined for 315 games, 220 of which are from McQuaid who was so far the only one to establish himself as an NHL regular. When a team wants to sign a prospect but ends up trading him due to his demands, most often the team trading away the player is right to not give in to the demands.

But how many of those cases were a player demanding more than their drafting team was willing to give them versus players being traded, rather than just going unsigned, because the drafting team wanted to recoup some of the value on what they felt was a bad pick used in a player they didn't want to sign?

Good question. McQuaid and Niemi were both guys, I believe who were simply not going to be signed because the team had no interest in them/disappointed with their development. I believe it was mentioned at the time that the Isles weren't going to sign Niemi and the Rangers found out and made them an offer. It was mentioned in his book 'Future Greats and Heartbreaks' that the club had asked author Gare Joyce to check in on McQuaid, so obviously they weren't sold on his development and wanted a fresh set of eyes to evaluate him.

The others I'm not too sure of: Staal, I'm guessing, would be money as Phoenix gambled on him in the second round and his development didn't make him look like he would turn into a 2nd rounder but he'd been decent enough that I'm sure Phoenix would have signed him, but probably not for as much as he was wanting (being a 2nd rounder and all); Russell and Werek I have no idea about.
