Smyth is worth alot, but he's not signed right? Hmm....
Isles fan here. Yeah. He's not signed. This deal better mean that a lot of the money earmarked for Jason Blake's bank account just flowed into Smyth's otherwise the deal doesn't make a great deal of sense. For what it's worth- I think Nolan is fed up with Blake (off ice attitude) and would have liked to see him traded. Smyth is much more of a Nolan guy- but he'll cost a lot more than Blake b/c he's the full package: speed/grit/skill/scoring/leadership (lacking in blake).
Isles did fork over a lot of their future "depth"- but neither Nilsson or O'Marra qualify as "can't miss" blue chippers. Only Islander prospect really fitting that category is Okposo. Plus a (likely) midling 2007 1st Rounder isn't exactly great value. Probably land Edmonton yet another O'Marra (3rd line character) type. Good deal if Isles can sign Smyth up.
It's funny how year after year, all of the consensus picks for trade destinations turn out to be wrong. All month we heard "Guerin to Detroit, Tkachuk to Anaheim, Souray to San Jose." Never happens.
But this Islander trade for Smyth really came out of nowhere for me. When I first heard he was traded, the first team name that popped in my head was Anaheim. But then the guy says Islanders and my jaw dropped.
At least you can't say things are boring out there in Uniondale.
the Isles made a huge push for the playoffs yesterday and improved their chances greatly. Perhaps a playoff run and getting into the playoffs can increase revenues this year and next. However, the Smyth trade may bite them in the butt a bit if he ends up signing with the Rangers next season (can I dream a little?).
