Farm team announcement coming...

i was listenting to the draft coverage on the team and flipping back and forth on the tv between the score and tsn (sportsnet's coverage was just embarrasing). when the smyth trade broke i was watching the score and al strachan was just delighted that the oilers had moved smyth. he did mention that the 2 new prospects would be playing next year in the oilers new ahl team that will be announced in the next couple days. he mentioned a city, but i was so busy screaming at the tv about the trade that i didn't hear what city he said. did anyone else catch this? strachan was talking like it was a done deal, but of course i always take anything he says with a grain of salt.

I was also told tonight that "we're getting really close" but could not get a location out of the source.

Sounds like something might finally be getting done.

I agree Sportsnet was a joke! What was that crap with the Deal or No Deal girls! It looked like American Coverage.

Anyways...I didnt hear anything from Strachan...about a new team...Mostly cause I was yelling at the TV as well. I remember though the Oil staff earlier in the year talkin about Windsor...was that still an option?

Someone must have heard something

If I had my way, I'd invite Edmonton to share an affiliation in Rochester with the Sabres. Florida is currently the second parent team and their prospect pool is below average with regards to overal depth and potentially elite AHL players.

This has no baises really, but could the city be Seattle??? I know the new owner of the Sonics said recently that he would like to bring an NHL team there so it could be like a test run. Portland can support both AHL and WHL teams as well as the NBA so why can't Seattle? Also....thank god, some good news!!!

Seattle needs an NHL arena first before they can bring in a NHL team. Key Arena holds only 14K for hockey. There's a couple of threads in the Basketball forum about it if you want more information.

The WHL Thunderbirds currently play in Key Arena but may be moving to a smaller arena in Kent.

Here's the latest about trying to build a new, NHL Ready, arena in Seattle:

There has been talk in Seattle about bulding a new arena for the Sonics that would also be available for NHL! I read an article about it in the Seattle times a few weeks ago. They have had discussions with the NHL. I think an NHL team would thrive in Seattle.

Portland, Maine is the home of an AHL franchise not Portland, Oregon

Portland, ME does not have a WHL franchise like Seattle or even Edmonton now has.

seattle would definitely need a new arena, as Key Arena makes Rexall look like a decadent arabian palace.

Maurry Gehr said on a WBS radio feed a while back that it was almost a done deal and that we'd have at least a split affilliation if not one to ourselves. And it didn't sound like it was going to be WBS either. As I stated in another thread, there's never been a more important time for one.

For two reasons. We have a ton of great prospects right now and we need some good news.

This announcement can't come soon enough.

We desperately need our own AHL team if we are to be in rebuilding mode. Otherwise, we have little control over the future of the franchise.

I don't care where it is. Just get a team of our own. Plus then we can bring Ward back from Europe to coach them again. I liked him.

Nobody said they did, hence the league name "Western Hockey League".

Only because the previous poster claimed that Portland, Oregon had an AHL team.................oh jees just forget it, you obviously didn't even read it. This is pointless.
