GM Burke's Diary. Mentions Sather & NYR.

Great read. Really gives an insight to GMS & a little as to what was going on with Sather...

Quote:
Wednesday, Feb. 14

Officially turn down the Blues. Vancouver GM Dave Nonis, my former assistant, tells me he is going to re-sign Salo. New York Rangers GM Glen Sather tells me he's not a seller, at least not yet

Monday, Feb. 19

At the general managers meetings in Naples, Fla., Feaster sweetened his offer to a first-round pick and Coleman and he wants a third to go with O'Brien. I call Sather to see if he can better that offer for O'Brien

Tuesday, Feb. 20

Sather talks to me about O'Brien, and Pleau asks if I want to revisit the Tkachuk deal and make it bigger. We decide it's not going to work, but we are interested in Bill Guerin. Sather tells me he's got a good offer for Aaron Ward from another team.

At least a first. Burke said he felt he could get a first for him.

err, did you just compare Gerald Coleman to Al Montoya?

Seriously...the guy's in the ECHL.

yeah, I'd much rather have the Rangers first than Tampa's first and Coleman

I talk to Florida assistant GM Randy Sexton about Todd Bertuzzi, and he tells me "the guy we like is Perry." I offer him profanity. If you are offended by profanity, it's difficult to make a trade in the NHL. If you are going to try to rob me, at least wear a mask. We talk to Philadelphia about Kyle Calder.

Thing is you weren't getting O'Brien for Ward, obviously Sather wanted O'Brien or he wouldn't have gone back to Burke.

so you want to give up a 1st round pick for an unproven dman? I think that makes no sense. It makes even less sense when what we need right now is an offensive dman, not a crease clearer. Guys like Tyutin and Girardi clear the crease just fine...and I think Staal can do that too next season.

I'm glad Sather went with Mara for Ward...Id rather give up Ward than a 1st.

I disagree. I think a crease clearer is the biggest need from the blueline. I'm not seeing it from Tyutin and Girardi.

It all comes down to what you want to give up. Like Edge said, you weren't getting O'Brien for Ward.

"But I did get May. He's a great character guy with a sunny disposition."

Hahaha...absolute best quote of the article. While this was great insight into the trading market, there is no way BB can polish that turd...

I'm not pushing for trading for O'Brien, I just don't see the teams' needs the same way 2forsbergaura1

Still, it depends what you want to give up. The player you describe is not easy to get and is very desireable this time of year.

sure,I'd love to get O'brian too, dont get me wrong! Would I give up a 1st for him? Nope.

I think we have a number of young D prospects that could pan out well for us. I'd rather keep the 1st and see what comes our way...it will be a rather deep draft too.

Plus, I like Mara and we did not give up much for him.

Where we will be slotted determines the usefulness of the pick. If we were 15-20 and you wouldn't give the pick up for O'Brien then you're crazy. If we're more towards ten or so, than I'd hold.

Pick 60 will be no different than say pick 16/17. That's why these PO teams gave them up like candy.

Looks like Burkie was the one who started the Ward trade talk, not Sather.
