When Lidstrom Retires who do you think should be the next captain for the wings?

Ya, he's adopting the Chris Chelios workout, and hiring the trainer in the off-season as well. That guy's gonna be busy commuting between LA and Sweden in the summers. If Cheli can go to 50, so can Nick!

yeah, a waste of electronic space, Nick will serve as captain 10 more years, so this thread is tad premature

Judging by his track record, Chris Chelios will be the captain, after Henrik Zetterberg retires of course.

Let's hope Nick never retires!

I go with Zetterberg!

I think when Nick retires that, that will be the day that our defense collapses. No disrespect to Yzerman or Shanahan but Lidstrom is the Red Wings Engine!

Give me a Z!

Isn't Nick adamant about returning to Sweden when he retires, so maybe it'll be sooner than expected?

No. Nick no longer plays the return to Sweden card. He'll play with the Wings until either he's had his fill of pro hockey or he physically can't do it anymore. Based on how he's still playing and how durable the guy is, my bet is he'll be around for a while longer. Maybe Hank will be captain before the age of 30, or maybe not.

Just to add to what DJ wrote, Nick's kids are in schools here. It is where they have grown up even if the family spends summers in Sweden. Of course, his boys are in the local hockey programs too, and all their friends are here. As anyone who has ever had to move a family knows, it can be pretty hard to uproot especially the longer you actually are in one place. Once the kids hit a certain age (jr high to high school), it seems so much easier to stay put until they're done than to deal with all the upheaval. I think Nick's a Michigan lifer-- at least until his kids finish school. It can be hard to move within a country where the educational system is somewhat similar. The structure and segregating (by courses of study) that European schools follow would make it even harder on his kids to adjust.

I wonder if Ilitch can get some legacy clause introduced, like any HoF'er that produces offspring while in a Wings uniform are automatically our property! Someone had the bright idea that Nick's boys needed to marry Stevie's girls. There might be a few good hockey genes between those two families!!! (Never mind that all the kids are kinda cute too.)

We'll be looking at Jim Nill's son first.

Last Prospect Camp I went to (while they were still in Troy) Jim's 13 y/o son was skating with the Big boys; And holding his own. Size too! and grit (inherited).

It's too bad these are people we're talking about and not... oh, you know, race horses. We could design the programs to produce future stars, and get a percentage of the deals. Problem is, it takes kids so looooooonnnnnnnggggg to grow up. I'll be older than you before we get our first contract, or I mean... older than you are now WHEN this moves forward.

What are we talking about here, 2025?? I think I'll be too old to remember when he started to play.

I think he can play as long as Chelios, but something tells me that he won't be doing it for so long. I would love him to play until he is 50, I think he could easily do it, but ...

How do I know you're not older than me now?

Probably not; Gotta go change my Depends (damn prune Paczkis).

Back On Topic.
They do it (breed hockey players) in Canada now.
Sutter
Hunter
Staal
Hextall
Howe (Gordie's from Saskatoon)
Keon

List goes on and on.
