Making it Datsyuk+Zetterberg+Malkin vs...Crosby...Neal...Kunitz...Dupuis? Yeah, no.

I'm just wondering who Shero picks up as our reclamation project...lets check out possible candidates shall we?

Ryan Smyth

George Parros
Dany Heatley
Dominic Moore
Chuck Kobasew

All viable candidates for the next signing.

I could see Gionta as a DB favorite. Small, plays hard, talented, MERICAN, former captain.

What do you think?

Pittsburgh Penguins 2014/2015
FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.850m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Beau Bennett ($0.900m)
Nikolai Kulemin ($3.500m) / Evgeni Malkin ($9.500m) / James Neal ($5.000m)
Jayson Megna ($1.250m) / Marcel Goc ($2.000m) / Pascal Dupuis ($3.750m)
Zach Sill ($0.550m) / Joe Vitale ($0.650m) / Adam Payerl ($0.627m)
Brian Gibbons ($0.605m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Kris Letang ($7.250m) / Paul Martin ($5.000m)
Matt Niskanen ($4.000m) / Olli Maatta ($0.894m)
Robert Bortuzzo ($0.600m) / Simon Despres ($1.250m)
Brian Dumoulin ($0.832m) /
GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)
Anton Khudobin ($2.250m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,957,500; BONUSES: $308,333
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $3,142,500

Things to do in the offseason:
- fire Bylsma!
- trade the injury bug to Philly!
- sign Kulemin
- trade for Khudobin (What do you guys think is the price for him? Sutter+Harrington?)
- trade Scuderi for a pick
- resign Niskanen, Goc, Despres, Megna, Sill, Vitale, Gibbons

Here are my thoughts to each line:
1st line: If this line stays healthy it´s pretty much one of the best lines in hockey.
2nd line: Malkin gets his buddy Kulemin and I think this would work pretty good for the Pens.
3rd line: I don´t think Megna is ready for a 3rd line but I think he has the talent to grow and to fill this spot in a 82 games season. Goc is pretty solid and Dupuis should be good for about 15 goals on this line. The Pens would have a pretty solid 3rd line which can handle the puck and score.
4th line: I would really love to see this line. These guys would throw their bodies around and won´t hesitate to fight, so I think that´s what the Pens need. Some hard working guys!
Gibbons: I really like this guy and I think he could help the Pens with his speed. Furthermore he´s a good PK´er and is capable of scoring a SHG.

1st DP: If Letang gets healthy this would be one of the best pairs in the league.
2nd DP: I think they were pretty good this season. Maatta will be getting better and Niskanen looks like a good fit for Maata.
3rd DP: They showed it this season and I think they´ll do it next season, too. A hard working pair which plays the body pretty good and Despres is a good good puck mover.

Fleury: I don´t know why, but I have a good feeling about him this year. I don´t think he´ll choke in the Playoffs.
Khudobin: He´s having a great year and I think he would be a solid backup.

The Pens would still have about 3 mio left so they could resign Stempniak but I think there´s no spot for him.

God, Gionta. I could totally see that as our next winger 'project'. Dude has so many miles on his odometer. Plays a hard game for a 5-7 guy. He and Orpik played college hockey together, no? Yikes.

That's scary, because I could already see the presser: "Gionta is a character guy, blah blah blah."

Where did Sutter go?

We're not going to trade Bennett and Despres AND another D for Eberle. Bennett may well be the RW1 answer all by himself. Not to mention that Shero would ever part with 2 defensemen after letting three (Engo/Orpik/Nisk) go in FA. Not his MO at all.

This is all very true. But not only that, but the trade makes zero sense for Edmonton as well. They don't want more young players.

Bolland is pretty much making that this season and is looking for a sizeable raise. The word was he's looking the max term and around $5 million per season. So basically the David Clarkson deal. Someone will pay him that. 2 Cup rings and all that. So really can't see Bolland coming to Pittsburgh.

What has Bolland done to earn that kind of money? He's always injured. And couldn't fill the glaring hole at 2C in Chicago where he had a great supporting cast.

I understand not wanting to pay up for Kesler in terms of assets. But he's a much better player than Bolland. Significantly better.

Edmonton isn't going to trade Eberle for prospects/non-impact players. They have a ton of issues... but they have lots of young ppl already.

Pouliot hasn't played much time in the AHL. Expecting him to start in the NHL is a big leap.

Raymond is a borderline top 6 winger. He's also soft as butter.

Bolland is going to get a hell of a lot more than 3.5m.

I don't think he'll get 5m and get term - especially not from a contender. As for why... he's a great #3C (other than his meh faceoff skills) that brings a lot to the table. There's also a lack of options for FA centers this summer. I could see a team like Edmonton overpaying for Bolland with the idea that he could move up/down in the lineup (2/3 role).

Yep. Unless we're going to pay him 4m+ to play as a top 6 winger, I don't really see him as a valid option here.

I see all the projected line-ups don't include Glass, but honestly, of all the team's UFA's, I think he's by far the most likely to return. He's gotten a huge push by the media team, the coach really, really likes what he brings and unless the team flames out in the most bombastic way possible, that coach will be back. I'm thinking he'll get a 2-3 year deal with a bit of a bump to around 1.3 per.

I'm probably going to stop following the team a bit come July 1st when the Glass re-signing and MAF extensions are announced.

Seriously though, for what reason do people believe Glass won't be back? The staff loves him, the media love him, and he'll be relatively "cheap." For Shero, bringing back Adams on a multi-year deal was a July 1st signing, I don't see this being any different. I'd almost go as far as saying re-upping him is a slam dunk in regards of things to expect this off-season.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this; but how has Määttä looked while looking at the whole season? IIRC he impressed a lot at the start and the middle of the season, as well as during and after the Olympics, but the last month or so I haven't really heard of him, has he been struggling a bit during the last weeks?

He has hit the wall a bit for sure. He was a healthy scratch once recently but it probably should have been more than once. Still hes 19 and overly impressive. I worry how he'll hold up in the playoffs but super excited to see it unfold

This team needs more top talent like Scarlett Johansson needs fuller lips... not. What it needs is is a little more toughness and old pylons like Brooks and Scuds gone. I made up some future contracts like Bennetts, Sutters and Niskys

Kunitz (3.85)-Sid (8.7)-Bennett (2.5) (Yes, I think Beau can grow into the role indeed and might bloom as an A-level guy with Sid)
Kulemin (2.8)-Malkin (9.5)-Neal (5.0) (Kulemin plays well with Geno and is grittier than most people give him credit for, shut up Don Cherry you can suck so much sometimes)
Sobotka (1.3)-Sutter (3.0)-Stempniak (2.5) (Stemps is not that though but Sutter and Sobotka as a duo could add some nice hardness to the line)

Martin (5.0)-Letang (7.25)
Niskanen (3.0)-Konopka (0.9)
Maatta (0.9)-Bortuzzo (0.6)

Fleury (5.0)
Zatkoff (0.8)

Cap hit: 62,3
Cap space for 1 backup goalie, 3 fourth line players and overall depth players for 2014/15: 8,8 million $

Of course this can't be measured in monetary terms: a new coach that will listen to Jacques advice on defence so we don't leave Fleury to hang, adapt to an opposing coach outsmarting him and most importantly get the team to play hard and clean (I'm looking at you Geno and James stop drawing stupid penalties) while not allowing the other team to rustle their jimmies so darn easily. This of course implies also returning the favour when they so obviously target Sid and Geno.

Yeah I'm with you, but he's been playing too much really: he was not ready to work NHL-minutes this season for sure.

He was more than ready for NHL minutes. Just closer to top 6 than the top 4 he is getting.

IMO, the lineup we should base our team around is:

Kunitz-Crosby-XXXX
XXXX-Malkin-Neal
XXXX-XXXX-Bennett
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

Maatta-Letang
XXXX-Martin
XXXX-XXXX

If we lose in the playoffs early again this year, the roster should get a complete overhaul with that as the base. My ideal lineup is:

Kunitz-Crosby-Stewart
Kulemin-Malkin-Neal
Bennett-Kesler-Dupuis
Sill-Vitale-Megna

Scuderi-Letang
Maatta-Martin
Niskanen-Bortuzzo

I'd re-sign Niskanen as long as he stays below $4 million. If not, I'd look to make a trade for a veteran bottom pair D. I'm assuming Sutter and Despres are moved for Kesler and Gibbons for Stewart.

ugh, why? Bennett is better at this point. Hell, Dupuis and Stempniak are better at this point.

Niskanen is not signing for less than 4. Not ever. He's also bad on the left side. Sutter and Despres won't get you Kesler without some high end draft picks and Gibbons won't get you Stewart either.
