In Arizona's shoes, I might start by demanding JVR and Kessel.
JVR and Kessel would be ridiculous. Instead, I'm thinking Kessel, Gardiner, and youngster like Holland/ Finn.

The problem with this trade proposal is that Phoenix is likely not going to be trading OEL. Yandle being more of an offensive defenceman isn't a fit here since we have Gardiner and Rielly in the system. We need a TWD that is young and will be able to join us when we start competing for the cup.

So is the OP's suggestion of JVR for OEL. Obviously, JVR/Kessel wouldn't be the end deal, hence why I said "Arizona... might start by demanding" that. You generally don't start negotiations demanding what you actually want, because that's a really good way to not get even that.

Also, if OEL were up for sale, if there were even a whiff of a chance of that, 29 teams would be beating down Arizona's door with offers. They'd have their pick of the litter, and the deals would very likely ratchet up to something ridiculous anyway. Fair value isn't a reasonable expectation here; people need to be looking at "what offer would it actually take," and in this case, that's "whatever Toronto would need to give to make their deal better than the other 28 offers Arizona's going to get."

Can't say I think that would get far.

I wonder what competing offers would include a top 6 scorer, though.

This may come to a surprise to you... but OEL is better defensively than he is offensively.

The deal would have to be Kessel and a small + for OEL. Elite for elite with the slight premium being on the DMAN.

Which is saying something considering he scored 15 goals, 29 assists for 44 points this year.

So why exactly was he benched vs Finland during the Olympics?

As a neutral fan I think that TML has to add a ridiculous amount

I don't think there's a person that would disagree with you. But then again, if you read the thread, you'd see that nobody said that either.

Can you think of any trade in recent history that suggests anything you said is close to realistic? Because I sure can't.

How often do young franchise players change hands without any sort of motivating factor?
