I was flicking back and forth between the Sens game and something else and when I came back to the game I caught the tail end of what sounded like a McGuire rant.
Something about how the Competition Committee needed to do something because "this is rediculous". Carolina had another PP so I'm assuming he was bashing on the standard of officiating.
I really don't want to start another thread where it degrades to "The NHL sucks" but could someone that heard what he said fill me in?
Thanks.
It was referring to Icing - Neil and Gleason were racing for an iced puck; Neil crushed Gleason into he boards and was called for boarding. He was complaining it should be no-touch.
No-touch icing. Neil nailed Gleason as they were going for a puck...think Gleason's wrist was hurt. Didn't look intentional by Neil, he was just going for the puck and checked him normally. I agree with Pierre on this though, that happens WAY too often.

Thanks guys. I agree with McG on this one. There's far more injuries from touch-up icing than there is 'exciting' races. And to be perfectly honest I don't think I've met one person who said they enjoyed those races. Just blow it down.
No-touch icing is a TERRIBLE idea. I hate seeing guys get hurt, but I hate the neutral-zone trap even more, and no-touch just makes the trap much more efffective. If defencemen don't have to get back to fetch the puck, they can root themselves in the neutral zone and add to the hideous congestion. That's why the trap works so well in Europe, even though they play on a rink the size of the Back 40.

If you put is past the D-man he has to be in position to beat you to the puck, regardless of whether it is going to reach the goal-line or not.
And players have pretty good touch these days. They're better at doing dump-ins that won't become icings.
And icings are usually broken plays, not intentional attempts to beat the trap.
But if your concern really is valid, then maybe they should look at a system where the offensive player does not need to touch the puck first, they just need to cross the goal-line before the defender touches the puck. That should reduce the accidentally dangerous collisions where two players are extending and jostling to touch the puck first.
What I'd really like to try, stupid as it sounds, is taking the red line out completely, the way it was in the early days of the game. There would be no icing call as long as you could get the puck outside your own blue line. The red line is just a fence to slow the game down, anyway. Part of its evil influence went away when they legalized the two-line pass. I'd like to see if removing the centre line completely might break the trap for good (or at least severely reduce its effectiveness by moving it closer to the opponents' end of the ice and opening up space behind it.)

I'd like to see them try that out in one of the feeder leagues.
I must confess, I do like it when somebody beats the icing, because it often generates some pretty exciting chances. It happens so rarely, however, and it's not worth the risk of a serious injury, so I'd be happy to see no touch brought in.
haha its pretty hard to get more than 4 but nowhere near 5 isnt it?
Hey don't shoot the messenger, that's what they said. Pierre said he'd be looking for over 4 per year and then Gord Miller (I think?) said maybe even close to 5 to which Pierre said no way. I assume that to mean 4.25M / year over a long term 5-6 year deal.
