On the bright side picks are looking better

The way we are playing, I would expect us to be drafting anywhere from #10-#14 (I really have no confidence in this team making the playoffs). SJ seems to have hit a little rut and have lost 4 straight. If we are lucky their pick could be as high as #18 (currently its a #20 pick).

I'm hoping we either make the playoffs, or completely bomb.

If we end in 9th place, I'll be slightly ticked.

Nah... the question was directed at brownman's "This thread is garbage".

Should've quoted it, my bad.

15 games left, 1 pt out of 8th and we're talking about hoping we tank the season so we can get a higher pick from an (as it stands now) extremely weak draft class.

Spare me the ********

EDIT: upon a second reading I admit the post isn't as negative as it looked lol but I still don't think it's necessary to talk about this just yet

either way, my bad

Have you SEEN our goaltending?

We've got no realistic shot at making the playoffs unless one of our 3 goalies somehow catch fire.

I've been a hab fanatic for 30 years. Unfortunately, looking ahead to the yearly draft has become the only real hope for about 10 long years now.

But on the bright side : our prospects pool is hot and therein lies the real hope. Not only that, alot of them are already knocking on the door ! At least this will be a serious team starting in about 2-3 years . (We can thank Andre Savard for this.....for hiring Timmins).

I want San Jose to keep on loosing.

I want the Habs own pick to be the 30th in the 1st round.

I don't completely agree with that, sure I don't have total confidence with our current goalies but what really made me mad about Aebischer tonight is that anytime the team came back in the game, he didn't make that key save to keep his team alive.

Halak, on the other hand, even though he did allow some bad goals, is able to make that key save.

I disagree with that entirely. Halak hasn't shown to make any more key saves than Aebischer.

Halak's technique is good and all, but he's not ready yet, it shows. I do hope Carbs continue using though as Aebischer is gone anyway and we need a backup with some experience for next year.

Either way, I'd like to see Bob use the extra 1st rounder to move up and get Couture

I was thinking about this last night, and had a good look at the standings.

Given the Habs current goalie situation...i could see the club going 5-10 down the stretch and finishing at .500.

There are only six teams with sub .500 records. Thus the Habs would end up with a pick in the 7-10 range. The San Jose pick could still be anywhere between 13th and 24th - I'm figuring somewhere in the 17-20 range.

If the Habs do go south I wouldn't mind ending up with the 7th and 17th picks - the draft isn't THAT bad.

Cherapanov
Alzner
Kane
Turris

Those four will be gone for sure. But the Habs may get a shot at at least one of the following centers: Gagner, Couture, Espo, Sutter.

I wouldn't mind having any of those four in the system, although I don't think I'd pick Espo unless he dropped out of the top ten.

Tell me there would be a lot of teams with better center depth under 25:

Plekanec
Lapierre
Chipchura
Grabovsky
White
Maxwell
Gagner/Sutter/Couture

The other option would be to take the second best defenceman if available. Ellerby would look pretty good in the system.

Mind you "settling" for Voracek or JVR wouldn't be the worst result either; or Bill Sweatt. All three are going to be solid NHLers at the very least.

If Montreal left the draft with Gagner and MacLean, or Couture and Tyrell, or Sutter and McDonagh, or Ellerby and Backlund.........I'd be of the opinion that they strengthened their prospect base considerably.

So the next few games - I'm not going to be overly bothered if we lose...I don't want to just miss the playoffs - either make it or go in the tank. Realistically, given that we need to score 4+ goals every night just to pick up a point with our current goaltending situation - I'd say the odds are better that we finish 10th worst than 18th worst.

i also think that if the team really disintegrates, some much needed major changes will be made to the supporting cast.

So - while I would like to see the team make the playoffs, receive miracle goaltending and win the Cup, I don't know that that is going to happen, and I always like to look ahead to the possible "bright sides."

I'd rather miss the playoffs by one point, than bomb and finish in last.

Well we're not going to finish in last.

Been down the "miss playoffs by one point" road before. Don't want to go through it again.

Trouble is the teams below us all have games in hand. Hell there's a good chance Boston will finish ahead of us the way things are going. Two teams get hot and the Habs are toast.

Be prepared folks. If Gainey really wanted to make the playoffs the would have picked up a competent goalie.

Maybe not a lot of key saves but he did some. And he looks less bad on a lot of goals. Less flopping around like a wounded bird.

I never thought I'd say this but I'd like to see Leighton right now in net. Hell, for sure he can't do worst than Abby.

I've got a match right here, where do I find Aebischer?

(I do agree that it would be entertaining).
