Paul Stastny

I know we have not seen Abdelkader play in the big league yet but looking back at this it's really bothering me that Stastny was taken two picks after Abdelkader, the kid has been a stud for the Avs...

That Abdelkader pick seemed way too high at the time.
Good on Colorado for taking Stastny.
IMO, they've had two or three consecutive strong drafts.

In recent years, it seemed like Abdelkader and Lofberg, and even Ryno, were taken way to high, considering how little was known of them.
Then agian, I thought the same thing about Helm.
I was not happy about that pick, and now I rank him in the top 5 prospects.

Stastny is about 14 months older. Still early to judge no

It's always easy to say "what if" after the fact. You never know with prospects. Drafting is an imperfect science.

Although I don't consider central Scouting to be the be-all-and-end-all of rating services; The fact that they ranked him 25th highest NA skater means that he WAS a known quantity on draft day.

He's been making steady progress, but has two more years left at MSU. Give him time.

Stastny sure would be nice, but I'm not going to complain about the Wings drafting....at least for awhile.

Detroit also had an opportunity to draft Pavel Bure, Mark Messier, Jaromir Jagr, Joe Sakic, Mike Gartner, Brett Hull, Larry Robinson, Bobby Clarke, Brian Trottier. It's pointless for fans to worry about what players a team could have drafted with a certain pick.

And it's impossible to know how Stastny would have done had Detroit drafted him. He very well could have stayed in college, or been stuck on the fourth line like Filppula and Hudler were for most of the year. After graduating college, prospects can sign with another team, unless I'm mistaken. Maybe the new CBA changed that?

If Turgeon had been able to go in camp Stastny is AHL rookie of the year.

He was a rather easy prospect for the Avs to scout, father and uncles played for the team, played 5 minutes down the road.

Some players just take a faster track. It happens in every sport. Justin Abdelkader is a very good prospect and has every possibility of being a good player for the Wings.

You can sit and wonder about drafts every year. How about the hundreds of players that were taken in front of Zetterberg and Datsyuk in their draft years.

Its silly to say that the Wings made a mistake. Drafts are crap shoots when you really break it down.

I did't say the Wings made a mistake, I said that Stastny is a heck of a player that we missed by two picks, that's all.

I don't think it hurts as much as not taking Bure.

Primeau eventually nabbed us Shanahan who was the final piece to 3 Stanley Cups. I dont think that hurts anymore.

And I understood what you meant, Birko. I just find it silly when people say stuff like that. The Wings have taken the right guy MANY times as well. And who knows...maybe they did this time too.

Just think, Detroit could have drafted Naslund instead of Lapointe.

How did Detroit miss a point per game Swede?
