Sabres/Oilers pick swap

Let's assume for a minute that the Islander give the Sabres the #5 pick (I seriously doubt it's going to happen).

What about Edmonton and Buffalo swapping the #3 and #5 picks.

Edmonton gets:
#5 pick
Chad Ruhwedel, D
2nd round pick (Buffalo's) (could be upgraded St. Louis 1st if conditions are met)

Buffalo gets:
#3 pick
Jujhar Khaira, LW

Edmonton can still draft a high quality players, plus they get a young puck moving defensemen, and a second round pick.

Buffalo would be in position to draft two forwards out the 3/4 elite players in this years draft to help speed up their rebuild, a big grinder on the wing.

Other idea is a little simpler:

Florida drafts Sam Bennett first overall:

Buffalo flips #2 pick to Edmonton for #3 and Buffalo gets Jujhar Khaira, LW also.

Easy yes. We won't get 5th overall though, no way.

I doubt Edm gives up 3 for 5 adding Rudy and a later pick.

It would likely have to be Risto, Zads, or maybe Pysyk.

Dropping from 3 to 5 is dropping a tier and that is costly.

The value isn't there for Edmonton to drop, you'd have to do better than Chad and a second.

The only reason for Edm to move is for Ekblad or a top pairing defender. going from 5 to 3 is not worth parting with a top pairing defender.

I just got a text from WGR550 saying:

NBC's Pro Hockey Talk site reporting the Islanders will send their 2015 1st round draft pick to Buffalo. No official word.

not exactly mind blowing news but expected.

If this is true I don't want to wish injury in anyone, but I will hope for a strong case of the flu for the majority of the season on the whole Islanders team.

Bennett - McDavid - Hodgson
Dal Colle - Eichel - Girgensons
Risto - Ehrhoff
Myers - Zadorov

trade Pysyk, Hodgson, and 2016 1st for a top 3 winger. Playoffs start March of 2017.

exactly how did my my pick swap proposal with Edmonton turn into this?

Plus how'd we end up with 2 sets to top 3 picks two straight years?

The cost to move from 5 to 3 is absolutely nowhere near Risto, Zads, or Pysyk.

I think the logic may be a touch off base here. Somewhere we are getting an extra first? Even if Buffalo managed to acquire said players. There is no guarantee each of them pan out to be saviors of this organization to even warrant a statement such as Playoffs start March of 2017.

Teams rarely drop over a perceived talent drop off in the top end of the draft.

It would take an overpayment for that to happen.

Just like the Sabres aren't trading from 2 to 5 with the Islanders this year unless the Islanders give up something stupid like Strome to make it happen.

IMO the whole thing is a waste because there is zero chance the Isles give up their pick this year.

Other than Garth getting fired before June 1st, I can't fathom a scenario where we get the 2014.

Odd I can't imagine a way the 2014 picks goes to Buffalo UNLESS Garth Snow is the one making the decision.

Snow is going to keep the 2014 pick because:

1) Deferring to 2015 distances him from another disastrous result from the trade - with the memory of losing both Vanek and Moulson still fresh, the last thing the Isles need is to slap their fans in the face again by forfeiting a top 5 pick.
2) As we saw in Buffalo, he'll rely on the injury excuse to pacify the owner's concerns about this year's dismal finish and claim this year was an aberration; that if Tavares and others were healthy, they would have made the playoffs.
3) He'll sell Wang on the idea that they make the playoffs next year so the 2015 pick won't be high enough to land either McDavid or Eichel.

Sorry but I would trade Myers before I trade Pysyk.

Edmonton fan here.

Your proposal isn't terrible by any means but would still be refused quickly enough.

The top 4 in this draft are slightly ahead of the rest of the prospects so dropping to 5 is rough.

Dal Cole would be available at #5 and he is a player I like and I think the Oilers would like but that area is one of positional strength for the Oilers. With their Center/Defense so weak their really is no way the Oilers trade out of the top 4.

Plus Kharia is a big guy projecting well right now so the chance of him being moved is also very unlikely.

Plus Edmonton literally has too many defensive prospects already in their system. I've heard they may have to move one or two of their promising young defensive prospects to make sure everyone gets proper playing time.

OT: It doesn't sound like anyone here wants Ekblad at #2? I know you need scoring/forwards but if he fell to you that would be tough to pass up.

Thanks for the Oilers opinion. I never try to set up proposals that are one sided. Khaira is a guy I have had my eye on for a while. Love to get a hold of him.
