...

what I'd like to see next season (if we can get rid of Malik and Rachunek):

Tyutin - Staal (our best 2 dman, Tyutin more a PP guy than Staal)

Mara - Girardi (Girardi is a safety net for Mara)

Pock - Rozsival (Rozsival is solid...allowing Pock to go up ice)

extra: Baranka, Sauer

Eh... Pock doesn't really impress me at all. I certainly wouldn't carry him as any more then a 7th d-man. I would go with some combo of...

Tyutin - UFA
Staal - Rozsival
Mara-Girardi

Possibly Baranka to break in at mid-season... I'd love to see him start in NY, but Staal, Girardi, and Baranka might be too much youth on the blue-line at once. Let the other guys solidify their positions first.

I think there is very little chance that Pock is with this team next year. Certainly not over Malik.

Malik's contract still has another year on it, and i expect (if Renney stays which i think he does) Malik to remain on the team.

Sauer will probably not make the team right off the bat.

IMO, Pock's play has steadily decreased ever since being benched in the beginning of the season (you might blame that on being paired with Rachunek or the coaching staff for killing his confidence or whatever the reason may be)... but the point is that you have to play in this league through the pressure, especially in NY and I dont see Pock living up to that. All this adds up, plus his Defense, which is at times shaky. If he's not part of an offseason trade I can't see him making the top 6.

As for Staal, he definitely deserves a shot in the lineup. Him with Toots would

I don't know if he plays the right side tho

Girardi has definitely solidified himself on the team... way to go! And I believe Baranka may come in and do the same

You can't pencil in Staal and not give Baranka an opportunity, IMO. At this point, the latter is probably more NHL-ready than the former.

I like him. I like how he hits the attacking player in his zone on a rush. He doesn't do the usual Ranger, "let the puck handler go where ever he wishes," that a Rachunek/Malik do far too often. However, I did notice on Saturday's game that Rachunek attacked the rush a few times too, so maybe Mara is rubbing off on his team mates, that would be PERFECT.

Playing fine

Mara is doing just fine.. His Big shot is much more of a threat then Ward, even though Ward got a goal yesterday.

The goal today off his skates was just a bad break..

You hope at some point the Staal's Baranka's and Sauer's make it and fill the role, but we have to be careful about that when they're 20 and 21 years old.

Mara is an offensive defenseman who if paired with a good stay at home type, could be very valuable to this team.

I would almost suggest Girardi. Mara is more of a risk taker where as Girardi is a solid stay at home d-man...just my 2 cents

Thing is I think for Mara you need a vet. A younger guy is going to make mistakes, which is fine as that's part of growing but it's not really a good idea to put the kid in a situation with Mara where he is going to have be that much better faster.

Mara isn't a disaster on defense, but he's going to need an experienced anchor. Girardi is certainly steady, but at this point might be better working with a more defensive veteran.

I think it might be a bit of a forced fit.

Fedor Tyutin,Michal Roszival,Paul Mara,Marek Malik and Dan Girardi are signed for next season. All of those contracts expire after 2007-08.Tyutin and Girardi will be group II's while the other three will be group III's

Karel Rachunek is a group II-$1.8 million QO.Will the Rangers give him the QO?Not tender him?He is eligible for salary arbitration. If Rachunek signs his QO or files for arb,it would be a one year contract/one year award.Rachunek is eligible for group III after 2007-08.Try and trade him over the summer?

Thomas Pock is a group VI.He is gone

Marc Staal and Ivan Baranka should be given every opportunity to make the team which wasn't the case last summer when the Rangers stacked the deck

The going rate for a top 4 defenseman is at least $3.5-$4 million in 4 year deal. The Rangers should avoid that

Stick with the current group on defense with the expiring contracts which buys the Rangers time to determine how Staal,Baranka,Michael Sauer and Bobby Sanguinetti will develop before committing to any long term deals on defense

The Rangers have invested two first round picks and two high seconds in those four young players

Staal-Rozsival
Malik/Rachunek-Mara
Girardi-Tyutin

Wouldn't be such a big role for Staal, around 15-17 minutes 5 on 5, and then some boxplay. The beuaty is that he would play in a role thats perfect for him, but also would get involved allot offensivly beeing outthere with Jagr.

Malik looks ok right now, though gooing into next season he will again be a questionmark. For a vet like him its a challenge to get ready every summer and show up in perfect shape, he couldn't do it comming into this season.

I defenitly think Rachunek should be signed, I don't belive in gooing into next season with 5 vets and Staal.

Baranka looks pretty good in HFD, I think he deserves a shot. But its better to wait and figure out where we are gooing, and then do something. Rachunek ought to have some value out there, not tending him is a misstake. He have also improved some this season, can he take another big step last season? Kind of like Roszival have?

So I would go into the season with thoose 7 D's, drop the least effective of them (Malik/Rachunek/Mara), or the one who we can get the best deal for, and then bring up Baranka.

Umm...i don't think Staal will make at the beginning of the next season, if he would not have terrific camp he should adjust to pro league in AHL.
He is playing 40mins per game now? Speed will be quite different than in OHL...

Pock is gone, if someone from Mara, Malik, Rozsival, Rachunek is not traded, there is no room for UFA d-man.
And Baranka should get spot if he earns it...too many bodies in the system, someone will be traded.

Malik - Rozsival
Tyutin - Baranka
Mara - UFA
Girardi

Malik and Rozsival stay together because Renney loves these guys. Baranka gets his NHL start and sign a defensive-minded UFA to pair up with Mara and cover him. Girardi is the 7th defenseman. Pock is allowed to leave as a UFA, and Staal is in Hartford. Rachunek will probably not be back either.

I like Souray but would cost alot of cash, id rathet get 2 dman for that price, more depth added, and Souray gets hurt every year but he is a good dman.

Vishnevski, Sarich are some ufa defensive dman, along with Danil Markov. Sarich and Mara played as a pair on the Bolts a few years ago.

If a UFA d-man were to be signed, I think it would have to be a physical defenseman. someone like Markov or Vishnevski.

With the increase in the cap, the Rangers should have no problem absorbing a 3.5-4 million dollar top 4 defensemen (and really need one).

From that list, the ones that meet the top 4 criteria and have an element that would be advantageous:

Roman Hamrlik
Chris Phillips
Scott Hannan
Sami Salo -Direct Replacement for Malik

Lesser Extent:
Cory Sarich - A bit over-rated

Obvious omissions:
Stuart/Souray - no interest in their pricetags...will get #1 money as a result of no true #1 in this years UFA crop.
