Which is why he went out and said that he would've been disappointed had he been traded?

I'm still stumped as to why GMs haven't used performance-based contracts in the cap world. I won't deny that it's harder to plan the budget with them but the benefits are pretty obvious as well.
Probably because the last CBA pretty much removed performance bonuses from the NHL. You can only earn them now if you're over 35, or on an entry-level contract, or if you have played 400 games and missed 100 days the previous year and only sign a 1-year deal.

See section 50.2 (b)(i)(C)(2). Seriously, thats the section.

And what kind of message does it send, not trading a fantastic asset if it's well known that he's walking at the end of the year, when you're present team is dysfonctionnal and has been for months, and has no legitimate claim to any higher aspirations for the season than finish 8th and be 1 and done in the playoffs ?

I'll tell you what message I myself am picking up : "Dear fans, I don't have the foresight to take a courageous decision that would be unpopular in the short term but well-advised for the mid and long term. And because of that, our team will continue to stink for years. Thank you for your attention. Yours truly : Bob Gainey"

That's the crux. No one knows if he's walking at the end of the year. If solid evidence ever comes out that Gainey knew in advance that Souray was leaving and still didn't trade him, well then there's just cause to be upset.

Okayyyyyy... now that suddenly makes a whole lot of sense to me. I should get around to reading that CBA sometimes, being proficient in legalese and all.

If what has been suggested happens and Souray signs with the Habs to be traded shortly before the season, that would be VERY classy by him. At the same time, it makes some sense to him as well since Bob could then let him have both a good contract and a some choice in where to go.

If he negotiates as a UFA while limiting himself to a few teams, they might expect him to sign for less than if he was truly on the open market.

That would in essence be a win-win situation unless one of the teams Souray would like just goes out and offers him a crazy contract and worst case scenario (nobody shows any interest), he's with the team he knows and probably doesn't dislike.

Gainey should sign Souray for up to 6 mill. He's hands down the best player on this team. Let Markov walk and use the savings to help sign Souray.

People should lay off Fournier when he makes predictions like this. When he does that, he's just talking as a host and as a fan of the game. This isn't about rumours, but about a conversation on radio where someone said his opinion. Seems obvious ebough, but this place has a problem with that.

What was is supportive argument, analysis or information to claim that?

Or did he just throw that in the air without additional information?

Bob had a good idea of what Sheldon's offseason plans were before the deadline. The only conceivable reason for not dealing him was that he was going to be re-signed. If he isn't, we made a big mistake. If we lose our next two games I'd play him at forward. See if he could work with Koivu or something. That's pretty much the most we can salvage from the Souray situation at this point... instead of a first round pick+.

If Sheldon is to stay here, Gainey will have to give him a McCabe-like salary. I'm cool with it. Make the big bucks now and a lot less later on. Just like Martin St-Louis.

I didn't say in my post that I didn't want Briere. He's got alot of talent, but he is a little whiny *****.

As for Crosby, sure he's whiny..but I'd take him in a second. I think anyone in their right mind would.

The same could be said about Briere.

He's significantly better than Koivu. If he's good enough to be a center on the highest scoring team in the NHL (which he leads BTW), I don't see why he wouldn't be on ours...

you have to remember though. Sure Crosby would be an exception..but honestly, imo, Briere would come here and score 25 goals and 60 points..

Yeah, really...it's noble to be passing on Briere because you think he's a diver and that would taint our glorious pristine franchise or whatever, but let's get real. I don't like the way Briere plays the game much either but I'd punch out my grandmother to get him to sign here.
