magic number?

I read on a website that the rangers magic number is "29" can somebody tell me what that means.

I would think thats a combination of points gained by the Rangers and points lost by whatever team is in 9th (right now that's Carolina) needed for the Rangers to clinch the playoffs.

Screw this magic number talk. If that gets in the way it'll be harder to win games. Take it a game at a time, all we have to do is win our games and win as much of them as we can. Play like monday and or today rest of the way and we'll make the play-offs.

no i understand that, however I just want to know how the system works. I'm with you guys, we need to take it one game at a time starting Saturday vs. the pens. I just want to know how it works.

Well seeing as our site was probably the one where you got it...

The Magic Number is the number of points that the Rangers need to guarantee a playoff spot. As you can see with 15 games left, they need 29 points...which of course is unlikely. It also is dependent on what the teams behind them do.
