Paul Stastny's Future

What's the deal with Paul Stastny, are the Avalanche going to resign him or are they going let him go? With Nathan MacKinnon emerging and them already having Matt Duchene... Does that mean Statstny is surplus?

I am curious because he's just the type of player the Capitals need. With Backstrom and Stastny as a one-two punch at center, the Caps would be legitimate team, once again.

I think they'll try to resign him to a long term deal

I agree. After his strong performance in the first round it wouldn't look good if they let him go. A long-term deal should keep the cap-hit lower, potentially lower than his current hit.

Stastny will never be worth more than he is today, contract year performance with great talent around him to inflate his production. His agent knows this, he'll be looking for a 7 x 7+ on the open market.

I still think he ultimately ends up staying with Colorado. If he makes it to free agency, I definitely see the Blues taking a hard run at him.

Bold prediction: 8m X 6 years to one of Toronto/Calgary

Calgary has the cap space for the next 2/3 years
Toronto has the desperate need to get a #1 center to try and make the playoffs next season

I think there is going to be a bidding war, and Colorado will back out fairly soon

Colorado has the cap to keep him long-term at a ridiculous price. Probably 6 years at 7.5m per.

He was great in the first round

Colorado is going to do their best to retain him I'd think

However he's definitely the odd-man out and they need to improve their defense

Maybe sign and trade if they find another team to trade with?

We wont be signing him to close that amount.

Something around 6x6 or 6x6.5 is much more likely.

He wants to stay in Denver, and is willing to take a discount.

Avs cant really afford to let Stastny go. It all depends on the money though. He could make a killing in FA and he would have to take a discount to stay with the Avs. From all of his interviews it seems as if he will stay, however we will have to wait and see. Having a huge playoff performance will make it even harder to see.

Stastny has said he wants to stay with the Avs and is willing to give them a discount.

And, if they can sign ROR, Stastny, Barrie and McGinn for a combined total of under about $19m, that leaves them over $6m per year in cap space.

I'd give him this from the Canucks. We need a talented set up man with vision, and he needs a physical shoot first player to play with (Kesler).

I think if he makes it to FA Colorado is already out of it. I am sure they will try and sign him before then.

Dont forget, if they sign Stastny to anything less than 6.6 they actually have more cap space. Kind the same with RoR, he already counts against the Avs cap by 5mil so Avs would only lose the difference between that and the one he has now.

Mcginn and Barrie wont get too much.

Stastny Will stay with the Avs. Roy likes him and wants to keep him around, Stastny has good chemistry with his line mates and has mentioned how he enjoys living and playing in Denver. He also said he would be willing to grant the team a discount to sign him, and understands that if he is playing for a winning team and surrounded by quality players, he might have to sign for a bit less to be fair to the team. Roy also mentioned that the reason they didn't get rid of him at the deadline was because they were confident they could bring him back.

Article reinforcing some of these points from the Denver Post:

Varlamov, who is contending for the Vezina, is a throw in. I have seen it all

Stastny always wanted to stay with the Avs. The only reason he hasn't signed yet is because of money.

It's safe to say that Stastny has won that battle. He'll get his money considering how he played in the playoffs.

Stastny is going to get paid like a star #1C when in reality he is only a 2C on any team that would consider themselves "competitive".

It's going to be funny when a team is paying him +7M when he's 32-35 years old considering he isn't even worth that now.

And Stastny is a masochist.

Nichushkin-Stastny-Chiasson

That's only if Nill is willing to throw money at him though. We have plenty of long term solutions for 2C in the pipeline. Personally, I think he goes for a stopgap like Richards or Grabo, but I'm just speculating.

Any team with a need for a top two center is going to after Stastny this summer. If he makes it to free agency he'd be one of the most sought after players by far.

But I think he resigns with the Avs. He has said he is willing to take a discount and Roy and company have said they want him back. 6x6.5 is my guess. Would make more on the open market but he knows the Avs are on their way to being a perennial contender and he no doubt wants to be part of that.

COL should have the room to sign Stastny + OReilley long term... my guess, 7.000M/yr & 5.750M/yr respectively both on long term deal (6-8yrs)

If he happens to hit FA, I'd have to think St. Louis would be really high up on his list. He has an opportunity to become the #1 center between Schwartz and Tarasenko, he's familiar with the division, St. Louis is his home town, and he would be on a competitive team. Hopefully Colorado decides to let him go.

Andy Strickland ‏@andystrickland

Those close to the #AVS aren't expecting the team to re-sign Paul Stastny. If so what a run in the mile high #NCAACHAMP #Statsnysmarts
