Simmonds to Toronto

What would be the value to get him?

Lupul+Gardiner?

It would probably take Morgan Rielly, which I don't see Toronto doing.

No way the Leafs would deal Rielly for him, with all due respect to Simmonds. If you're dealing a player you believe you can build around, you'll be looking to get back a player you can build around, something Simmonds is not. He can be a core piece sure, but not a centerpiece.

Not even close, honestly. If were not moving Simmonds in a deal for a top pairing defenseman or a top line LW, there's no reason to move him.

JVR or Rielly. That's it.

You'd have to add a pick to make it fair value, but Philly doesn't touch this unless JVR is involved..

Why would the leafs do this trade? We're not using gardiner in a trade unless it involves a centre or a bigger stay at home defencemen. Another winger is the last thing we need.

Can you blame him? They obviously don't want to move Simmonds but have a need for a top defenseman so he asked for someone who can be that for them. If the Leaf fans say no then Philly fans have no incentive to move Simmonds.

Exactly, the Flyers biggest need is a legit number one d-man. Rielly does have the potential to turn into that in a few years.

I find it more likely that Philly would move a player/package to land a current legit number one d-man (like Weber) rather then trade for a potential one.

Why would they do it for JVR?

Simmonds was on the first PP unit with G but at ES his ice time was limited and he was playing with Brayden and Vinny for most of the season. With more ice time I think he'd produce more then JVR. Plus he brings the grit.

Rielly. Op your offer is the equivalent of them offering Luke schenn and Scott hartnell for jvr.

Well any deal would be around Giroux if Philly wants Rielly, so that ends that.

Rielly isn't even a number 1 defensemen. He has the potential to be.

Giroux is already an established PPG, first line center and a top 10 forward in the whole league.

That is just ludicrous.

That's probably honestly the only realistic deal to be made and frankly, I can't see the Flyers wanting to give up Simmonds for JVR and I can't see the Leafs wanting to give up Rielly for Simmonds so there probably isn't a deal to be made here.

That's crazy talk.

Giroux was nominated for the Hart this year. Rielly has the potential to be a top pairing guy, but even projecting him to be a Norris contender is overly optimistic.

Why would it make sense for us to trade Rielly in a package for something that is not relatively close in value to his potential?

How about Luke Schenn for JVR? Fixes Philly's winger problem and addresses Toronto's distinct lack of Schenn.

Simmonds isn't going anywhere.

Lecavalier for Lupul is the only deal I'm interested in making with Toronto.

Since when did Rielly become a top defenseman?

Well noone said he did, my post said equivalent to his potential. I didn't say he is a top pairing dman, his potential is.

If McDavid is the next one, should Pittsburgh offer up Crosby or Malkin?

Philly fans are dreaming if they think Rielly is going the other way...for a 2nd line talent in Simmonds. Wake up!

Rielly is the future of our blueline and it'll take a hell of a lot more than Simmonds, a PP specialist and glorified 2nd liner.

OP's offer is more than fair value but Leafs decline as it's poor asset management. A winger doesn't fill the need of a centre, or a top pairing defenseman, so why ship off our best bargaining chips for anything other. Giving up on Gardiner is asking for trouble, his potential and skill are too high to risk losing. If tamed, he will be a staple on the top pairing for years to come.
