Thomas Vanek isn't the dominant force we expected him to be. (Update: sick/hurt?)

Broken foot?

Seems like it's a lower body injury that is hurting his mobility badly

Briere and Vanek have very similar stats, except ATOI, which 6 minutes less for Briere.

And The Wild winning that game 7 really didn't help our chances in keeping him

Listen it's a strategy, honestly he didn't have his best game, he didn't look like he wanted to get dirty

It's pretty hard to blame Therrien for anything right now, at a 5-0 record so far

We can blame him a little if he starts trying to break what's working to fix what's not.

#Habs Thomas Vanek when asked if his play is related to an injury: “No. It’s just a matter of not being good. It’s as simple as that."
So, no injury. Damn, he's that bad ?!?? Terrible.

Love how when a player plays like ass it has to be an injury. No. Some players just have bad games or weeks.

There is a difference between bad games / what he had. Bad games would be bad giveaways / bounces / fanning on shots etc.
He just straight up looked like he wasn't even trying at all except for one shift.

I still hope he's lying (because I can't possibly believe anyone would be that bad without an injury) but good on him for owning it, whatever the true story is.

Imo he might have been our worst player in the first round, and of course last night he was pathetic. But the really short shifts he took last night might mean Therien is lying.

But if he's not lying...don't sign the guy at any price. Playing badly can happen to any player, but he looks lazy as hell right now.

Injuries are always covered up in the playoffs while the team is still "alive". Vanek did come to play in game 1 and 2 against Tampa and he has had his moments where he expressed anger when something doesn't go right for him. This level of ineffectiveness from him is unusual even with his reputation for coasting because it looks like he can't even move out there.

Snipers take a longuer time to get back to game shape... just watch if Pacioretty and Vanek hit a good streak quickly, everybody will want to re-sign him again.

Well, maybe. Some already expressed reservations even when he was playing well. I'm undecided. Frankly, it's not a discussion for right now anyway, and while I'm a big fan of skill and like Vanek, and can appreciate snipers playing a low-key style to then attack from good areas of the ice, he's been a liability for a couple games now.

I think it comes with the territory for Vanek's style that he'll be invisible at times. That's fine. But to be a liability, to look like he's going through the motions, losing every puck battle, and generally hurting his line is a tough one to swallow. I don't think I'd want that on my team at any price. It's too damaging to the culture of a club. And I don't question Vanek's passion or interest -- he seems like a consummate professional, and always has seemed that way to me -- but the prospect of throwing $7m+ at a guy who can play this badly without injury is worrying.

If it's really not an injury, I like how he at least admitted to being plain bad. He knows he'll have to step it up, now show us, Vanek

It was strange watching him play yesterday. Most of the time, it looks like he's lost out there, doesn't want to get involve, barely skate and made bad decisions with the puck. His body expression told everybody that he was not fit to play.

Then one shift he played hard and we saw the Vanek we wanted to see.

If Vanek is truly not hurt, I don't know which GM will give him that 8x8. Yesterday Vanek was a negative to the team. Especially against the Bruins where we need every player to contribute both ends of the ice.

If he doesn't wake up, our first line is in big trouble. How far we can go without a first line?

If he isnt injured, then those short shifts make no sense. Therrien would lose it and bench him for the whole game and likely dont dress him for the next game.

It has to be an injury or sickness. Coasting is one thing. If anything, if he was coasting, his shifts would be longer actually.

Those short shifts make no sense if he's 100% healthy. There has to be something. It just doesnt add up.

Subban and him have chemistry, he deflected 2 of his shots last game. On this factor alone we should sign him. Subban is here longterm and always looking for a shot-pass, vanek is his guy.

Watching Vanek all those years in Buffalo, he's the best tip-in guy in the league, by far. There should be a highlight reel of all his ridiculous deflection goals over the years. Great hand/eye coordination in front of the net.

An absolute beast in the pay area...
Having a hard time getting there lately PP aside.
He was never a speed guy but a very smart skater like Jagr just knows how to cut down the ice.
His total lack of mobility must be a lower body injury.
I have a hard time believing he just doesn't care.
He did score two and it should have been enough in game two.

All good points: I wonder:

Is he there in the offensive zone, open and in shooting position , is the passing lane open when he is, why no puck for a shot or distribution? Is the defense keying on him? Assuming he is open a lot, and he is, and only averaging 3 shots a game, none of which are grade a scoring chances, what do you think it is? How many instances of three quick passes between Pathes DD and TV have you seen in the playoffs so far?

Does not care . lol They all care...a lot

I wonder what it is like learning to play off wing after seven years on the other wing? I wonder what I would do if I was playing without a contract knowing I am uninsured and if I blow a knee my family is screwed. I wonder if TV will earn his two mil from the franchise in the playoffs and give it his best when it matters but sometimes, after reading these comments, I wonder if some of these posts being put up by the self avowed " most knowledgable hockey fans in the world" are written by eight year olds.

Some guys get paid to bang, others to play d , some to score, some to make plays happen, and then there is the top 1% that do it all. I wonder which one of those the fans thought they had.If you are paid to score and you do not get the puck in scoring position life can be difficult, ask Patches or TV.

We are playing a team that is so deep their third line center would be our first line center if he played for us.
