Is Randy Carlyle a good coach?

More and more chatter coming out of toronto suggests it's a real possibility Carlyle doesn't get fired and is coaching next season. Management seems to think he's a good coach, and the team's problems are mostly based on the players rather than the system.

What do you think? Is randy carlyle a good coach?

------

I think not only is he a bad coach, but he's a rare instance of a coach actively preventing the team from being as good as it could be. Often times coaches go just for the sake of a shake up, but there's nothing major inherently wrong with their game plan. But this isn't the case here; carlyle has made the leafs a worse possession team in the order of almost 10%.

His system is absolutely garbage. His players hate him. He's awful. Maybe he used to be good but he's been bad since 2011.

Anaheim had problems with puck possession towards the end of Carlyle's tenure. The Leafs were the worst possession team in the league this season, even below Buffalo, and set a new NHL record for shots against over 82 games.

At some point, yeah, it boils down to coaching. The Leafs, for all their faults, aren't that bad of a roster. It's become pretty clear that the Ducks weren't either. It's not like they've had that drastic of a roster turnover since Carlyle was there, other than a couple of good prospects coming up and the Ryan trade.

Terrible, terrible coach. Fetishizes grinders and thinks helmets exacerbate concussions by "overheating the brain." That's pretty much all you need to know about Randy.

Well he did win a cup so he can't be that bad. Toronto definitely makes him look bad he's a terrible coach for Toronto.

He's got to go, but I wouldn't say he's very poor

Better than Wilson, though people are saying Wilson would've excelled with this current group.

Anaheim still isn't a good puck possession team, though better than they were at the end of his tenure.

As for not being much different, I'd say their blueline looks very different now than in 2011.

Cam Fowler
Hampus Lindholm
Sami Vatanen
Ben Lovejoy
Francois Beauchemin
Bryan Allen

vs

Lubomir Visnovsky
Cam Fowler
Toni Lydman
Luca Sbisa

I don't know if wilson would have excelled, but they probably would have been an average possession team (like they were all the time he was here) which would have translated into probably another 5-10 wins at least

Here's an interesting article that comes to the conclusion Carlyle is basically giving the Leafs ~$8m less cap space to work with:

Yeah he is, but he needs a certain system for his style to work.

No coach that chooses to completely ignore all statistics and think his team getting outshot by 20+ every game is fine is a good coach

isn't it the coach who is responsible for implementing the system?
