Blown Leads and Squandered Points

This has to be the 10th game that we have lost after having a 2 goal lead this year. That would be about 15 standings points squandered if you count the ones that went into OT. Surely not the way playoff teams behave. Not the way coaches keep their jobs, either.

All you can do is look ahead now. What's in the past, is in the past. Nothing you can do about it.

This afternoon's game is the next MUST WIN game for the Rangers. That's all they or we should be worried about.

It was another brutal blown lead. At least they got the point. Gotta come back strong tomorrow (later today) and get 2 this time.

...

I just look at this lost point today as more motivation for the Rangers to get 2 points against Carolina. If we beat Carolina, we'll be back in 8th...

this one i blame totally on renney. he has got to play the kids. how can you go with 6 forwards and 4 defenseman. inexcusable for him to bench dubinsky.

In games where the Rangers had a 2 goal lead and lost it...
0-5-3

In games where the opposition had a 2 goal lead and lost it...
3-0-2

Yup, and with 13 games to go the team still controls its own destiny.

Yea, and they should've won all 27 they've lost this year.

The SAD part is, we probably should've won 13 out of those 27.

That's what I was thinking. There's quite a few games we've also deserved to lose, but have magically escaped with a win.

We should be competing with the Devils and Sabres for first in the east right now, not for the eight seed. As a Giant and Met fan as well I am used to a lot of heartbreak. But this team is just pathetic with the amount of points they have squandered.

This is kind of like the Giants this past year. They keep losing, yet still have the best chance at the final spot!

lol

Here's the difference. Good teams don't squander leads/points. Bad teams do. That's why the Rangers are a bad team and the Devils are a good team.

whatever, the race is incredible.

All 5 teams fighting for the 7th and 8th spots have trouble keeping leads.

The
Rangers
Leafs
Islanders
Canadiens
Canes

The Isles gave up a lead. Games are close and they are all back and forth.

This ***** gonna go down to the last game, its really unbelievable this year. Every night theres a new team in the 8th, 9th and 10th spots.

And now 7th will be changing every night as well with this recent Icelander loss. 6th isn't even secure.

Whats really crazy is the Rangers play th Islanders and Canadiens 2 more times and the Leafs once.

They own the Bruins this year and they have 2 left with them as well, including one this weekend.

Its right there for them...

Question is - whats the magic number this season? 89 Points? 90? 91? 92?

12 Games left ----->
89 = 13 more points - 6-5-1
90 = 14 more points - 7-4
91 = 15 more points - 7-3-1, 6-3-3
92 = 16 more points - 8-4, 7-3-2

I think somehwere in the 7-4-0, 6-3-2 range is gonna be the ticket.

This weekend is even more GIGANTIC now.

When we get a 2 goal lead, we tend to get passive and when we get passive, we suck.

We're a team that live on puck possession. When we lose that possession, bad things happen, because we aren't a good trap team that can defend leads.

The best thing would be if we mentally could just continue to play the same way it it's 2-0, 0-0 or 0-2, but obviously we can't. We suck at trying to lay low and strike at the opponent mistakes, we usually come up making the mistakes ourselves instead when we are in the lead.

2 Goal Leads (With Stats)

So I looked through every game the Rangers played this season and found out which games the Rangers scored the first two goals of the game. Then I figured out which of these games they lost in regulation & which were lost in shootout/ot. Then I found out which games they won after scoring the first two goals. I then found in which of those games they had blown the two goal lead (the opponent tied the game after the Rangers were winning 2-0) and the Rangers still managed to win.

LOSSES
10/14 vs. BUF
12/21 vs. FLA
12/23 vs. TBL
02/05 vs. DET
02/24 vs. CBJ
03/13 vs. OTT

OTL/SOL
02/22 vs. NJD (SO)
03/01 vs. PIT (SO)
03/10 vs. PIT (OT)

WINS
11/02 vs. SJS
11/10 vs. ATL
11/19 vs. TBL
11/21 vs. CAR
12/09 vs. OTT
12/30 vs. WAS
01/04 vs. PHI
02/09 vs. TBL
02/18 vs. CHI
02/27 vs. MTL

WINS AFTER BLOWN 2 GOAL LEAD
11/08 vs. FLA
01/06 vs. MTL

Total Record: 12-6-3

This means the Rangers lost a total of 15 points in games where they were winning 2-0 and gained a total of 27 points. In hind sight, the Rangers could have 91 points right now which would put them 1 point behind New Jersey and 3 points behind Buffalo. However, 1 OT loss was against NJD, so drop them 2 points so they'd be at 90. Same goes with Buffalo, drop them 2 and they are at 92. Rangers would be 1 point back of #1 in the conference.

What's more disturbing is that 6 of the blown lead losses occurred since February with a total of 9 blown 2-0 leads in February/March. In that time span, the Rangers have played a total of 19 games. This means since February 1, the Rangers have squandered 2-0 leads in 47.37% of their games. That's ugly.

How many games have we won after trailing by two or more goals?

Those stats above me are pretty damn ugly but let's compare to the games we've come back and "stole" points from the opposing team. If we're losing more games up by 2 than winning down by 2 then thats the equivalent to how many points we've given up.
