When will we grow our own superstar?

When is the New York Rangers organization going to produce a bonafide homegrown superstar?

How/Why do we miss out on guys like Crosby & Ovechkin?

Why does it seem like so many other NHL teams get there hands on young, super-talented players in their prime and we never do?

Yeah Leetch was one but, when did he come into the league? why none since?

We've had the lousy records up to last year to give us the draft picks. Where are our prospects from 2,3,4 years ago?

I know this is really sort of a rhetorical question and there is no real "answer", and that all I'm going to get is opinions, but I want to hear.

How long has Slats been in charge now? Who are our scouts?

I'm a little frustrated about this. Anyone else?

Henrik Lundqvist doesn't count lol?

In terms of a foward or defenseman i'd say Marc Staal will be our new guy

never, cause we'll never get the #1 pick

and if we ever did get a #1 pick, it'd be a bust with our luck.

You have to define superstar. Ovechkin and Crosby were both #1 overall picks. I am not gonna give the Pens or Caps credit for them, anyone who had those picks would have taken those guys. I think we have actually done a decent job in recent years with our drafting. We've produced Lundqvist and Prucha last year. We have Staal who is close and seems to be a surefire top D pairing guy. Bobby S is another prospect who looks to be headed in the right direction. The only real thing you can get down on about this current regime is taking Jessiman over Parise, Getzlaf etc. Jessiman is playing better though so that may not turn out to be too bad if he pans out.

Do we really need a skater superstar? We already have Lundqvist. Just look across the river - essentially, Brodeur is their only superstar. As long as we have a solid team that is sound in all aspects of the game, all we'd need to be successful is Lundqvist.

Goaltending:Henrik & Montoya are legit sueprstar condidates, with henrik of course being much closer. but look at Montys AHL numbers and imagine that as part of a 2-headed monster tandem

Defense: Staal baby, its all about Staal

Offense: Korpikoski. I still think this kid is going to be a superstar, a guy who will net 30+ goals a year. his strength with the puck, and speed are both A+ parts of his game. one more year in the AHL and I think hes going to take broadway by storm.

Hey, Lundqvist. And Staal's on his way.

And I don't like to get ahead of myself but let's never count out Dupont, Russell, Callahan, Kveton. Some guys just explode at the NHL level (like Prucha last season). Chances? Extremely slim, but who knows? We have purposely acquired prospects with a lot of drive, and we all know how much success has to do with desire and determination. We learned from the Brendls and Sundins.

Still, though, it would be nice to get a guy like Tavares. But hell, Dupuis for Bourret?! Maybe Slats can pull Cullen for Toews over the summer. In all honesty, I really think we'll resolve the issue at center via trading for a prospect(s). I think we're holding out for our prospects to really take off and then we'll be sellers. Building a system full of upper-mid-level prospects might prove to be a stroke of genius. We have some BIG trade value potential.

Do we need a superstar?

...in our system? What's wrong with populating our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines with gritty, hard-working, home-grown talent and signing a superstar or 2 when they become available? Maybe that was the lesson of the infamous Brendl/Lundmark draft, go with safer picks and sign the best when they're established as the best, limit the boom/bust ratio. I'd be very happy with a core group that plays together for a long time, sticks up for one another, and plays well as a team and adding the elite skill players in the offseason.

No. But after not making the playoffs for 10 straight years, you'd think we would have drafted one by now...

Does this deserve its own thread?

That is the first paragraph in the GM manual for the NEW NHL.

You need to define 'superstar'...

seems as though each team has a player, or group of players, who play to some sort of superstar status to win the Cup. Can you have a bunch of very good players get you to the playoff through hardwork and then have some standouts? Perhaps, but again, you'll likely need a guy, or group of guys, putting up some numbers akin to what you'd expect from a superstar.
