He didn't get pushed. He brought Hextall into the fold in the first place so he could hand pick his successor.

Holmgren spoke to Hextall at the draft last summer. I don't think Holmgren said, "Hey, come be my assistant, we could have a great time!"

More likely (and has been all but confirmed) is that Holmgren spoke to Hextall and said, "I'm not going to be GM forever, I'm looking for a way out, and I'd love to have you in the fold for when the time comes".

EDIT: Their hand wasn't forced. This was pretty clearly planned for quite some time now.
