Orpik Subban
Markov Emelin
Tinordi Gorges

Beaulieu Pateryn

Don't know if Markov will be back? But I think Orpik would be a perfect partner for Subban giving Tinordi time to fill that role in like 2 or 3 years. It's kind of what Murray should of been but Orpik has a lot more mobility.

Plus could also sign lower tier guys maybe like a Clayton Stoner or something if Tinordi and Beaulieu can't take a whole season .

So what do you guys think?

Same issues as Markov. Old and expensive.

I'd rather take a flyer on FAs like Nikitin, Stralman, or Butler. Just go cheap and two-way/mobile.

No. This team doesn't need to get older.

Murray and Bouillon are gone (hopefully) in the off season. Weaver will likely be re-signed.

Tinordi and Pateryn are the two guys that are more likely to be promoted IMO.

I think you'll see:

Tinordi - Subban
Markov - Emelin
Gorges - Weaver
Pateryn

Beaulieu likely gets promoted the next year after seeing some spot duty.

I'll pass every time on Orpik.

Tinordi and Beaulieu should be up next season.

I'd rather another Hamrlik type. Similar to when he first joined us. What a beast.

We're not getting a top 4 D through UFA, need to give the kids a chance or make a trade

Tinordi and Beaulieu are not even #1 and #2 in the list of d-men I'd call up from the minors to play in Montreal. Tinordi adds absolutely nothing to a hockey team, and Beaulieu needs one more season in Hamilton before being ready for a more important role.

To answer the question, taking for granted Weaver, Bouillon and Murray are leaving, I'd totally extend Orpik an offer, and start the following d-core next season:

Markov - Emelin
Orpik - Subban
Gorges - Pateryn

Orpik is pretty much in a murray-esque decline. Skating is failing and he can't move the puck. He's not quite at murray level's of useless, but he's on his way.

As much as I would want to add a top 4 defenseman (and if I were to sign one Orpik would be one of the last names on my list...), when are Tinordi and Beaulieu going to play on this team if we keep adding defenseman? I can understand having Bouillon and Murray this year since they weren't really NHL ready but they are now.

Go and read threads on the Pens board discussing Orpik... Pens fans feel he now needs to be constantly babysat (i.e matched with a D partner to cover up his poor play).

Not interested. Beaulieu and Tinordi will play next season.

Pateryn will be on a one-way contract in 2015-2016.

No.

Like Briere/Murray, the idea of Orpik is a much better fit than the real thing given his actual level of play & likely UFA value

Why go after Orpik, who would be a disaster on a top 4 role, over developing Tinordi?

No. Not an upgrade in the top 4, likely not even an upgrade on Tinordi or Beaulieu for the next two years. And he'll get a really stupid contract.
