Yes, I'm sure that is the role Babcock has for these two. Make sure they are responsible on the defensive side this year and then(hopefully) open up thier offensive games next year unless one is dealt. I really wish Kopecky were on this line right now instead of Langfeld, but hey it is what it is.

Update on Kopecky

Decent article from Dave Waddell at the Windsor Star. Kopecky is due to start skating end of this month, with maybe skates with the team by mid-March. However the docs may want him to take the rest of the year off to insure he heals up properly.

Couple of good quotes from Cheli and Schneider in there, especially Cheli on Bertuzzi. Both of our boys however say... wait for it....

Kopecky is probably done for the year.

Kopecky is probably done for the year. He might come back later, but then it will be too late for him.

But what about Filppula and Hudler? The Wings have a lot of injuries now at forward and it seems like those 2 might get the chance. They did it the last game and responded very well.
I think Babcock has given Filppula every chance he could and that's fine, but I think he could give some more time to Hudler, mainly on the PP. The kid has a good shot, very good shot and can create chances.

Last 3 games both Filppula and Hulder 15+ min, now it's time to grab the spot and not let it go. We'll see if they can do it.

Now, here is the thread where you can track how they have developed all season long.

RED WINGS HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK
On Hudler
“Its good for Huds (Hudler), cause Huds can score. If he can just learn to back check and compete every single night he can be a real good player. A lot of people talk about his skating. His skating is fine if he works at it.”

Back-to-back games
“They are a real good team, we’re a good team. We had the upper hand tonight. We gotta go back and try do the same. It’s so evenly matched just a fine line turns the game. We were fortunate tonight.”

I've just gone through the whole thread and while it has been a lot about Lang , Fischer (the thread was not supposed to be about them), one can find a lot of good posts about the progress of the 2 during the season.
And now as they are on fire, it's fun. I think Hudler has 3 GWGs vs the Preds.

Hudler has three goals in two games, including the winner in Detroit's 5-2 victory Tuesday at Nashville.

"He's been on fire lately," Zetterberg said.

The 23-year-old center is making the most of his first opportunity to play regularly in the NHL after beginning the season with one goal in 16 games. He has 14 overall in 65 games this season.

"It's not like he just turned the switch," Babcock said. "He's getting better and better.

"He has a chance because of his heart, skill and ability to be a difference-maker."
