Derek Stepan and the Stepan line

For all the killing Rick Nash gets, Stepan has been just as bad....

He completely disappears in the playoffs, and has since he's been here.

So basically we have 2 scoring lines, a productive 4th line, and this line of underachievers/big game Houdinis + Kreider...

Do we just keep sending them out there and hope things change?

Somehow we made it this far with them being terrible, but that's about to change real fast if they don't show up. But can they show up? Is it in their DNA?

Kreider has been back for 3 games and they are still terrible.

No he hasn't. He's been way more solid than the meme over here would have you believe.

What games are you watching if you think Stepan has been a bad player?

It's about production, I'm not talking about his defensive capabilities.

We need production from our "first line" and we aren't getting it.

You are out to lunch if you think Stepan has been as bad as Nash.

He could be better but he's been playing very well recently.

It's the playoffs, you expect ppg numbers from him? Our pts leader has 9, 6 isn't nothing. And he has two goals, two more than Nash. Our leader there has 4.

He's really been fine. The meme about first line centers around here is pretty bad too. The top 30 centers in the league are first line centers, at the very least. Step isn't 1-5, but he's in that top 30, and forgetting even about that he's been a solid player for us. He's definitely a part of why we're still playing hockey.

I saw him take part in the series clinching goal so I don't know the heck you're talking about.

As a line, they are collectively bad....

I guess production doesn't matter, though.

Scoring a goal is too much to ask? 2 in 14 games? Yeah, real impressive.

Wow 1 assist that's great.

Look I'm not saying he's been as bad as Nash, but it's like the bar is set so low that he gets a pass constantly.

Can you guys honestly say he's been playing well during the playoffs?

2 goals and 4 assists in 14 games???? Give me a break.....

How is "disappearing" as bad as being overtly terrible like Nash has been on the offensive side of the puck?

Watch the games, Step has been fine. We've played tight checking, low scoring games. Offensive numbers are down, Goalie numbers are up. Welcome to playoff hockey.

His offensive production leaves something to be desired.

His two-way play has been phenomenal.

No wonder you're disappointed, you're stat watching a player on a team that doesn't even average 2.5 goals a game.

What monstrous production are you expecting?

The idea people that watch the games are giving him a "pass" is pretty laughable. Especially considering he's a player that isn't looked at as a good skater, yet he's consistently in on the forecheck and very reliable defensively. I have no problems with him at all.

That said, can he be better? Hell yes.

Stepan's been playing very solid defense. It's hard to get points when nobody on your line is producing. Ask Crosby.

Stepan has forced tons of turnovers by the opposition. His production has been a bit down, but when the players you're paired with range from invisible to horrendous, it's tough to make things happen.

While Stepan isn't the entire problem on that line, he's not part of the solution either.

What pisses me off more about him is not his offensive production but his faceoffs. He is seriously abysmal on draws which is a large part of that line's lack of production. Lose offensive zone faceoff, chase the puck in our end, dump and chase. Wash, rinse, repeat.

OP should be embarrassed? Really? Stepan has been a no show in each playoffs he's been a part of. He just doesn't create offense. He is what he is. A heady player that's a below average athlete. I admit it's easy to get frustrated at Stepan, but blame Glen Sather for not having drafted or signed a better option for top line C. I also think Stepan gets a lot more leash around here because he's a home grown product who people fell in love with at the WJC's.. that's a whole different discussion

Agreed, his line went heads-up with Giroux's line over 7 games and pwned them, then they get a lot of focus from Pittsburgh but still comes out of top of it. Nobody should tear him apart after that.

Offensively, his line obviously isn't working. Stepan seems to thrive the best with a little bit of more N-S wingers (Hagelin/Callahan types).

Also, Stepan is real important with his right handed shoot. Its the only option we have there right now...

But you cannot hate a player we drafted ourselves, right? To some here Dubinksky, Anisimov, Callahan and Hagelin are HOFers.

Lost in the numbers has been Stepan's tremendous defensive play. He has stolen many a puck in the neutral zone. His presence could be very important against Montreal.

Stepan is an easy player to pick on because he isn't flashy, but he's a very effective player overall. He's not an ideal 1C, which is why his production leaves a bit to be desired, but he's our best option for that spot.

Don't you know Jesper Fast and Oscar Lindberg are the next Crosby and Malkin?

One thing that really disappoints me about HFNYR is the blatant bias and overvaluing of our own prospects. I kind of get it, because we sucked at drafting for so long. But damn, do some here take it to an extreme
