Karl Alzner

I saw him play a bit in WJC and well without tons of ice time he impressed me much. Beside that I never saw him play but I heard a lot of good things about him. I heard he was already really good in his own zone but he puts great number especially for a 17 yo in the WHL this season. Who in the NHL has pretty much the same upside? Is he more of a long-term project or he could make the league at 19?

Well any infos on him would help me much writing something on him.

Thanks!

a friend of mine who was a season ticket holder of the Hitmen this year sees Alzner as a top pairing guy in the NHL, but as of yet he doesn't see him as the standout number one defencemen on any NHL team.

Considering most dmen don't play their first year after being drafted, I doubt we'll see Alzner in the NHL next season. I'd be very surprised to see more than 2 players from this summer's draft play in the NHL in 08-09 considering we only had 2 playing this year from the 06 draft.

Alzner is an 18yo this season in the 'dub, and will be entered into the draft a year later than the rest of the '88s because of a late birthday. I think he's the most NHL ready defenseman in the 'dub, simply because of his maturity on the ice. He just looks like an NHL player in his size, skating and the way he handles the puck.

That being said, I don't think he'll be in the NHL on more than a trial basis next season, and the WHL fans will get to see him again next year. I think he'll break into the league in the year after.

I agree with everything you say. He may not end up being the Best Dmen in this draft in the end. But he is the most NHL ready player in this draft. But again I agree he will take a year or two before coming in.

For what it's worth Darryl Sutter was kicking around as well, but it's not like it's his rink or anything.
