NHL sources say Zenon Konopka was suspended for taking DHEA, an over-the-counter supplement recommended to him by non-team doctors.

DHEA: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/d...tural/331.html
Maybe he was taking it for some uh... performance issues

Pseudoephedrine legal up to 150 mg. According to IIHF medical chief, Backstrom level in A sample came back at 190.
He'd have to retire if he couldn't take pseudoephedrine. I don't think he can breathe through his nose without it.

Hmmm, maybe a club that wants another top pick next year?

Now the Sabres just need to figure out how to get the other 19 suspended.

What could possibly make one go to a non-nhl sanctioned doctor when its so easy to take something that could get you banned? And if you're gonna take something shady, why not just go for broke and do steroids? Did the DHEA really give you so much a boost that it was worth the risk?

I dont want to resign him just on account of him being a moron.

This whole reactionary "performance enhancement" business has gotten out of hand. Banning things like pseudophedrine (since it was brought up) and DHEA is just nonsense. The Olympic regulations have long gone all the way down the rabbit hole. May as well ban everything that isn't consumed directly from a natural food source. Banning pseudophedrine is like banning caffeine, except it has the benefit of alleviating congestion (the horror!). The irony is that it's almost definitely the case that DHEA doesn't do crap for hockey players, unless they're having a different sort of performance issue.

I'm sure they won't be re-signing Konopka. Who would sign a borderline NHLer who is going to miss 1/4 of the season off the bat? As for the bolded, have fun blacklisting half the league on that basis.

Perhaps Zenon needs to work on what constitutes being a harder player to play against.

What? What???

I think this is all my fault. I was at a game where his composite stick shattered, and I shouted at him "Z, that wouldn't have happened if you had some wood out there!"
